Japan's autumn foliage season — known as koyo — is one of the most commercially significant travel windows in the East Asia leisure calendar. For B2B agents handling FIT bookings or group programs, koyo represents both an opportunity and an operational challenge: demand is compressed into a six-week window, allocation is finite, and the sequencing of itineraries across regions requires precise coordination with a reliable on-the-ground partner.

The koyo season does not move uniformly across Japan. Understanding the regional timing is essential for sequencing multi-stop itineraries and managing client expectations.

Hokkaido leads the season, with peak colour typically occurring in late September through mid-October — most relevant for clients extending from a broader Japan itinerary. Central Honshu, including Nikko, sees peak foliage from late October into early November. Kyoto and Nara follow, with most years delivering their best colour between 10 and 25 November, though this varies by three to five days annually depending on temperatures. Osaka's Minoo Park and surrounding areas peak slightly later, often carrying into the first days of December.

For agents, this creates a natural itinerary structure: clients travelling in early-to-mid November can move from Nikko south through to Kyoto and Osaka, catching each region near its peak. Clients arriving in late November should anchor in Kyoto and move to western Japan. Building itinerary timing around the Japan Meteorological Corporation's annual koyo forecast, which publishes in August, is standard practice and something Explera's operations team monitors closely.

Tofuku-ji in particular has strict crowd management in place during peak season, and group entry requires advance coordination. Ryokan in Kyoto, Nikko and the Hakone/Fuji area operate with release windows that open 12 to 18 months in advance for the November peak. Mid-range city hotels in Kyoto and Osaka follow Japanese domestic demand patterns and are frequently sold out by July for November dates.

For group programs, the allocation challenge is compounded by coach availability, licensed guide capacity and timed-entry slots at major sites — all of which operate on their own release schedules. Agents should note that timed-entry bookings at popular Kyoto temples during koyo are not available on a walk-in basis; they require pre-authorised operator access.
