Komodo Liveaboard Diving Programs: A B2B Guide for Travel Agents

13 May 2026 · Explera Group · 3 min read

Komodo National Park is widely recognized as one of the world's top diving destinations, and it is a consistent draw for specialist travel agents handling dive itineraries, adventure groups, and high-value FIT clients. The liveaboard segment is where most serious diving programs operate — day trips from Labuan Bajo exist, but for agents building a premium program, a multi-day liveaboard vessel gives clients access to dive sites that day boats cannot reach and a logistical quality that justifies the price point.

The Komodo Dive Market: Key Facts for Agents

Komodo's dive sites span three main zones: the central area around Rinca and Komodo islands, the northern sites near Gili Lawa and Siaba, and the southern sites including Crystal Rock and Castle Rock — the latter two are where the action concentrates for drift diving and pelagic encounters. Manta rays are reliably present from October through April; hammerhead sharks are more consistent at northern sites year-round.

Water temperatures in Komodo are highly variable. Upwellings from the deeper southern sites can drop temperatures to 18–22°C even in high season, which makes a wetsuit recommendation (5mm) part of any responsible client briefing. This is worth communicating clearly in your pre-trip documentation to avoid complaints.

Liveaboard Vessel Categories and Pricing

The Komodo liveaboard market broadly divides into three vessel tiers:

Budget to mid-range (USD 150–280 per person per night): Wooden phinisi vessels, typically 8–12 passengers, shared cabins or basic private en suite. Adequate for experienced divers who prioritize dive quality over comfort.

Mid-range to premium (USD 280–450 per person per night): Modern phinisi or steel hull vessels, private cabins with AC, proper dining, up to 5 dives per day, Nitrox available. Best-selling tier for agent-referred clients.

Luxury (USD 500–900+ per person per night): Full-service vessels with professional dive guides, camera rinse stations, premium meals, and limited passenger counts (6–10 pax). Strong for high-value couples, anniversary celebrations, and specialist dive groups.

Our tours and experiences service includes curated liveaboard programs at all three tiers with transparent net rates for registered trade partners.

Season Planning: When to Sell Komodo

Komodo is a year-round destination, but understanding the seasonal differences helps agents manage client expectations and close bookings with confidence.

April to October (dry season): Calmer seas, better visibility at most sites, easier conditions for nervous divers. High demand — vessel inventory sells out months in advance. Agents should work with lead times of 60–90 days minimum during peak months of July and August.

November to March (wet season): Rougher seas on some crossings, but manta encounters peak and prices drop 15–25%. Experienced divers often prefer this window. Lead times are more forgiving, typically 30–45 days.

What Agents Need to Confirm Before Booking

Before placing a client on a liveaboard, confirm the following with your DMC partner:

  • Dive certification level required: Most Komodo liveaboards require Open Water minimum; drift sites recommend Advanced Open Water or logged drift experience.
  • Maximum dives per day and Nitrox availability: Important for serious divers and worth confirming in writing.
  • Cancellation and rebooking policy: Liveaboards typically hold strict 60–30–0 day cancellation policies. Make sure your client documentation reflects this.
  • Included vs. excluded items: National park entry fees (currently IDR 150,000 per person per day for foreigners, subject to change), equipment rental, and transfers to/from the vessel are often excluded from base rates.

Combining Komodo With Bali

The most common program structure for agents is a Bali extension on either end of a Komodo liveaboard. This works well commercially because it allows agents to sell both a cultural stay and an adventure component as a single trip, maximizing destination engagement and per-client revenue.

Recommended structure: 3–4 nights Bali, 4–5 nights Komodo liveaboard, 2 nights Bali or direct return. Flights between Bali (DPS) and Labuan Bajo (LBJ) are operated by Garuda, Lion, and Citilink with daily service; flight time is approximately 90 minutes.

For full program coordination across Bali and Komodo, Explera Indonesia handles both in-market operations, giving you a single point of contact for the entire Indonesia program. Review our Indonesia destination page for a full picture of what we cover.
