Greece and Greek Islands for Travel Agents: Athens, Santorini and Mykonos B2B Guide

16 July 2026 · Explera Group · 2 min read

Greece combines ancient world heritage with island luxury in a way no other Mediterranean destination matches. Athens, Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, Crete, and the Peloponnese each require distinct operational approaches. For travel agents building Greece programmes, understanding island logistics, ferry connections, and the dramatic seasonal demand curves is essential.

Athens: Acropolis and Classical Greece

The Acropolis is one of the world's most visited archaeological sites, and group access requires timed-entry management. From 1 April to 31 October, timed-entry ticket slots are mandatory; groups of 10+ must use the dedicated group reservation process. The Parthenon, Erechtheion, and Propylaea are visible from the path regardless of which slot is booked, but access to specific viewing areas is managed.

The Acropolis Museum (at the base of the hill) holds an exceptional collection of pediment sculptures and provides crucial context before the site visit. Pre-booked group entry is available; the museum's glass floor over the excavated Neolithic settlement is universally impressive.

Classic Athens programmes combine: Acropolis and museum (morning), lunch at Monastiraki or the Plaka, optional Athens market (Varvakios) visit, and sunset cocktails at a rooftop bar with Parthenon views. Tours and experiences in Athens include licensed archaeologist-guides who provide depth beyond standard licence-guide commentary.

Santorini: Village Logistics and Sunset Timing

Santorini's dramatic caldera — the world's most photographed volcanic crater landscape — creates specific logistical challenges. The island has no flat land for a standard airport bus; Santorini Airport to Fira is approximately 20 minutes by private vehicle; cable cars from the port (for cruise passengers) have capacity limits and long queues during ship calls.

The caldera-edge villages of Oia, Imerovigli, and Firostefani are pedestrian-only; no vehicles access the main walkways. Group programmes must use local bus or private vehicle to the village outskirts, then walk in. Oia's famous sunset is the island's single most competed-for experience — at peak season (July–September), the western wall and Oia castle viewpoint attract thousands of visitors at dusk.

Luxury and celebrations programmes in Santorini include private caldera-view terrace dinners, sunset catamaran charters with volcanic hot springs stops, and private villa buyouts in Oia.

Mykonos: FIT Programme Structure

Mykonos operates as a premium FIT and small-group destination rather than a traditional coach-tour location. The island's appeal is lifestyle-driven: the iconic windmills, Little Venice, the beach clubs (Nammos, Scorpios), and the ferry connections to neighbouring Delos (the uninhabited ancient site, UNESCO-listed).

For agents, Mykonos is best sold as a 3–4 night stay within a larger Greece programme. FIT a medida programmes routinely combine Athens 2–3 nights, Santorini 3 nights, and Mykonos 3 nights as an island-hopping programme.

Inter-Island Transport

Ferry connections between Athens (Piraeus port) and the Cycladic islands (Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos) operate year-round. High-speed catamaran (SeaJets, Hellenic Seaways) reduce Piraeus–Santorini to approximately 5 hours; standard ferries take 8 hours. For groups, ferry tickets must be pre-booked — peak season ferries sell out weeks in advance.

Domestic flights (Olympic Air, Sky Express) from Athens to Santorini and Mykonos take 45 minutes and are the preferred option for FIT clients. Flight frequency is high in summer; off-season frequency drops significantly.

Hotels and resorts in Greece range from Athenian boutique hotels in Kolonaki to caldera-view suites in Santorini and design hotels on Mykonos' beaches.
