French Riviera: Cannes, Monaco, and Nice for Luxury Clients

20 July 2026 · Explera Group · 3 min read

The French Riviera — the Côte d'Azur — is Europe's most iconic luxury coast, a sun-drenched stretch of the Mediterranean between Saint-Tropez and the Italian border that has defined glamour and exclusivity for over a century. For travel agents serving high-net-worth clients, the Riviera represents both extraordinary opportunity and significant operational complexity. Property prices, yacht charter rates, and restaurant costs are among the highest on the continent, and the competition for the finest inventory is fierce. Success in this market requires both excellent supplier relationships and intimate knowledge of when and how to book.

Getting There: Nice Côte d'Azur Airport

Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE) is the third busiest airport in France and handles direct long-haul traffic from New York (JFK), North Africa, and the Middle East, as well as comprehensive European connections. Private jet arrivals use the dedicated Fixed-Base Operator (FBO) terminal — Nice is one of Europe's busiest private aviation hubs.

For ground transfers: - Nice to Monaco: 30–45 minutes by private car along the Basse Corniche or Middle Corniche coastal roads; helicopter (Héli Air Monaco) takes 7 minutes and is a signature luxury add-on - Nice to Cannes: 40–60 minutes by private car along the A8 autoroute - Nice to Saint-Tropez: 2–3 hours by road (traffic is severe in July–August); helicopter is strongly recommended for premium clients in summer

Monaco: The World's Most Compact Principality

Monaco requires advance operational planning for several reasons. The Principality is sovereign (not part of France, though it uses the Euro and maintains open borders). Parking a coach in Monaco is both expensive and logistically restrictive — most group visits arrive by private vehicle, minivan, or helicopter.

Key Monaco experiences for luxury clients: - Formula 1 Grand Prix (May): One of the world's great sporting spectacles. Hospitality packages along the circuit (Rooftop Club, Harbour Tribune) must be booked 9–12 months in advance. Hotel availability during Grand Prix weekend is essentially zero without 6–12 months' advance planning. - Monte-Carlo Casino: Non-timed; minimum age 18; dress code enforced (smart casual at minimum). Private gaming evenings can be arranged for VIP groups via the casino's business development team. - Prince's Palace: Changing of the Guard at 11:55 daily; State Apartments open for visits (seasonal). - Monaco Grand Prix Historic (biennial, in May in even years): Often more accessible than the main F1 race and equally atmospheric.

Cannes: Event Calendar and Villa Contracting

Cannes is best known for the Cannes Film Festival (mid-May), which completely transforms the city. During the Festival, hotel rates multiply 5–10x and every quality restaurant and yacht berth is committed months in advance. For agents with clients attending the Festival, bookings should be in place by the previous October at the latest.

Outside Festival season, Cannes is an elegant resort town with excellent hotel infrastructure (the InterContinental Carlton, the Martinez, the Majestic) and a superb beach culture. Private beach clubs on La Croisette offer daybeds, cabanas, and lunch packages that can be pre-booked for groups.

Villa contracting: The hills above Cannes (Mougins, Valbonne, Théoule-sur-Mer) and along the Cap d'Antibes are home to extraordinary private villa inventory. For groups of 10–30 requiring exclusive private accommodation, a villa is often more cost-effective than a luxury hotel and provides the privacy that ultra-high-net-worth clients expect. Lead time: 6–9 months for summer availability in the most sought-after properties.

Yacht Charters: The Riviera's Signature Experience

Yacht charter on the French Riviera runs from April to October, peaking in July–August when the harbours of Saint-Tropez, Antibes, and Monaco are packed with superyachts. Charter categories for agents:

  • Day charter (6–12 hours): 20–60-foot sailing yachts or motor yachts; excellent for groups of 8–12; includes crew, lunch, and water sports equipment. Book 3–4 weeks in advance in peak season.
  • Week charter: Typically priced by the metre; a 40-foot sailing yacht runs approximately €3,000–5,000/week in low season, significantly more in July–August. The French Riviera to Italian Riviera circuit (Monaco to Portofino) is a particularly popular week-charter route.
  • Mega-yacht charter: For ultra-luxury clients; charter fees start at €80,000–100,000+ per week; must be handled through specialist brokers

Practical Notes for Agents

The French Riviera is in France (Schengen Area, Euro). Monaco uses Euro but is not in the EU. ETIAS applies for visa-exempt non-EU/EEA visitors to France from 2025. Tipping norms follow French standards: 5–10% for excellent service, €10–15/day for private guides, €5/day for drivers.
