Japan Autumn Foliage (Koyo) Programs: B2B Planning Guide

9 March 2026 · Explera Group · 3 min read

Japan's autumn foliage season — koyo — is one of the country's most visually spectacular travel periods, and commercially it rivals sakura in client demand. Yet many travel agents who run Japan programs give sakura the bulk of their planning attention and treat koyo as an afterthought. This is a missed opportunity. Koyo programs can command premium pricing, attract a sophisticated repeat-visitor segment, and deliver strong margins when built correctly.

Koyo Timing: A Longer Window Than Sakura

One significant advantage of koyo over sakura from an operational standpoint is the timing window. While cherry blossom peak in any given location spans roughly 7 to 10 days, autumn foliage in Japan moves progressively from north to south between early October and late November, and the colour-change period at any single location typically lasts two to three weeks. This gives agents more scheduling flexibility.

The general progression: Hokkaido peaks in early to mid-October, the Japanese Alps and northern Tohoku follow through mid-October, Nikko and the Tohoku coastal areas hit peak in late October, Kyoto and Osaka reach their best colour from mid to late November, and southern destinations like Hiroshima and parts of Kyushu run through early December.

A well-designed koyo itinerary can thread the bloom front across 10 to 14 days and deliver consistently spectacular foliage throughout.

Where Koyo Programs Deliver the Best Experiences

Kyoto is the marquee koyo destination — Tofukuji, Eikando, and Kinkakuji in autumn colour are genuinely world-class. However, Kyoto is also at its most congested during November koyo season. Smart operators balance iconic Kyoto content with less-visited alternatives: the Arashiyama bamboo grove, the mountainside shrines of Ohara, and day excursions to Nara or Osaka.

Nikko, northwest of Tokyo, is another strong koyo destination that's often underused in group programs. The UNESCO heritage shrines set against red and gold maples are both spectacular and somewhat more manageable in terms of crowd levels than the Kyoto peak sites.

For premium programs, the Japanese Alps offer extraordinary autumn scenery with the added benefit of onsen accommodation — ryokan in Matsumoto, Takayama, or the Kiso Valley fit naturally into a koyo itinerary and command a pricing premium that clients consistently find justified.

Hotel and Accommodation Considerations

Koyo season demand for accommodation in Kyoto runs almost as tight as sakura. Properties with garden views or engawa (veranda) seating overlooking autumn gardens sell out early and often command supplementary charges during peak November dates.

Our hotels and resorts service holds contracted allotments at key koyo properties, including traditional ryokan in Arashiyama and selected garden-view rooms in Kyoto city hotels. These need to be confirmed well in advance — October and November dates in Kyoto should ideally be locked by May or June of the same year.

Building the Koyo Product

The clients most likely to book a dedicated koyo program are typically Japan repeat visitors who have already completed the standard Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka circuit. They're looking for deeper content, more considered pacing, and a less tourist-dense experience. Your program should reflect that.

Consider routing that incorporates regional Japan — Takayama, Kanazawa, or the Kiso Valley — alongside the headline destinations. These areas offer outstanding koyo scenery with significantly smaller crowds and excellent traditional inn accommodation.

Our tours and experiences service can build bespoke koyo content including private garden access, tea ceremony in autumn garden settings, and curated photography walks with local guides.

For full ground logistics across a multi-city koyo routing, Explera Japan manages our Japan operations including licensed guide coordination and chartered transport across Honshu and Hokkaido.

Pricing and Lead Time

Koyo programs justify premium positioning. Clients who understand the seasonal specificity of the product accept pricing 15 to 25 percent above comparable non-peak Japan programs, particularly when the itinerary includes ryokan accommodation and exclusive experiences. Build accordingly, and start the planning conversation with your ground partner at least 6 months ahead.
