Lombok and the Gili Islands: Building B2B Programs Beyond Bali

21 May 2026 · Explera Group · 3 min read

Lombok and the Gili Islands represent one of the more straightforward upsell opportunities in the Indonesia portfolio. Clients heading to Bali who have already been once, clients who want a quieter alternative, or adventurous FIT travelers looking for something beyond the main island — Lombok and the Gilis address all three. For agents, building this combination confidently requires solid knowledge of the transfer infrastructure, the accommodation landscape, and what each island actually delivers.

Understanding the Geography

Lombok sits immediately east of Bali, separated by the Lombok Strait. The island has its own international airport (Lombok International, LOP) with direct services from Bali (approximately 45 minutes flight time), Kuala Lumpur, and several other regional hubs. The Gili Islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air — sit off Lombok's northwest coast and are reached by fast boat from either Lombok or directly from Bali's Padangbai or Serangan harbors.

Key logistics fact for agents: there are no motorized vehicles on the Gili Islands. Transport is by foot, bicycle, or cidomo (horse-drawn cart). This is part of the appeal for clients seeking a digital detox or a slow-paced island experience, but it means luggage management and mobility need to be considered in the program design.

Transfer Options and What to Quote

Bali to Gili via fast boat: Multiple operators run daily departures from Padangbai and Serangan. Journey time is approximately two to two and a half hours to Gili Trawangan in good conditions. Sea conditions during the wet season (November–March) can make this crossing rough; agents should brief clients accordingly and consider air via Lombok as an alternative for less adventurous travelers or groups with elderly members.

Bali to Lombok by air, then boat transfer: This is the premium routing and the one to recommend for clients prioritizing comfort. Flight from DPS to LOP takes 45 minutes; from Lombok airport a private transfer to Bangsal harbor or Teluk Nara (the fast boat departure points for the Gilis) takes approximately one hour. Add 30–45 minutes by boat to Gili Trawangan.

Lombok-only programs: For clients interested in Mt. Rinjani trekking, Senggigi beach, or the traditional Sasak villages of the interior, a Lombok-only program with a private vehicle makes more sense than island-hopping. Rinjani summit treks require a two to three night commitment and should be booked through a licensed guide operator — confirm with your DMC partner.

Our transfers and transport service covers coordinated transfers from Bali to Lombok and all inter-island connections with consistent service standards.

Gili Trawangan vs. Gili Meno vs. Gili Air

Understanding the character of each island helps agents match clients to the right base:

Gili Trawangan (GT): The largest and most developed. Restaurants, dive schools, beach bars, nightlife. Best for younger travelers, dive groups, and clients who want an active island base with amenities.

Gili Meno: The smallest and quietest. Fewer guesthouses, minimal nightlife, very slow pace. Best for honeymooners and couples seeking genuine seclusion. Has a turtle sanctuary that works well as an activity inclusion.

Gili Air: Middle ground — more amenity than Meno, more peaceful than GT. Growing popularity with yogis and wellness travelers. A credible recommendation for couples who want quiet without total isolation.

Accommodation Contracting

The Gili accommodation market is dominated by mid-range boutique hotels and eco-bungalows, with a small number of genuine luxury properties emerging particularly on Gili Meno and Gili Air. For agents, the key challenge is that the Gili market is not well-represented on standard GDS platforms — direct DMC contracting produces meaningfully better rates and guarantees than online aggregators.

Rates for contracted mid-range accommodation on Gili Trawangan run approximately USD 80–180 per night for a garden or beach-facing room. Luxury villas and boutique eco-lodges on Gili Meno range from USD 200–600 per night.

Combining Lombok and Bali

The most commercially productive program structure for agents is:

  • Days 1–4: Bali (cultural and resort program)
  • Days 5–7: Gili Trawangan or Gili Air (beach, diving, snorkeling)
  • Days 8–9: Lombok (Senggigi, Sasak village, or Rinjani base)
  • Day 10: Return via Lombok International or back to Bali by fast boat

This structure gives clients a genuinely diverse Indonesia experience and allows agents to sell a compelling 10-day itinerary at a good per-client revenue level. Explera Indonesia coordinates the full multi-island program with a single operations contact, which simplifies communications significantly for agents managing multiple bookings simultaneously.
