Phuket Yacht Charter for Travel Agents: What to Know Before You Sell

10 April 2026 · Explera Group · 3 min read

Phuket's Andaman coastline — the Phang Nga Bay limestone formations, the outer islands of Phi Phi and Racha, the protected waters of Phang Nga — is some of the most commercially viable sailing territory in Southeast Asia. For agents working the luxury and honeymooner segments, a private yacht day charter or liveaboard package is one of the highest-margin products in a Thailand program. This post covers the operational structure so agents can quote accurately, set client expectations properly, and avoid the common sourcing mistakes.

Vessel categories and what they deliver

Phuket's charter fleet broadly divides into four types: traditional Thai wooden schooners (usually 15–25 metres, suited to sunset or half-day trips), motor catamarans (fast, stable, well-suited to island-hopping itineraries with snorkelling stops), sailing catamarans (quieter, more immersive, slightly slower), and superyachts (25 metres and above, with full crew, water toys, and catering).

For FIT luxury clients, motor catamarans are the workhorse — comfortable, predictable, and competitively priced. Superyacht charters are appropriate for multi-cabin family or small group bookings where exclusivity is the product. Agents should clarify early whether the client is seeking atmosphere or comfort, as these often point to different vessels.

Pricing structure

Charter pricing in Phuket operates on a vessel-per-day basis, not per person. This is an important distinction when packaging. A standard motor catamaran capable of carrying 12–20 guests runs approximately USD 900–1,800 per day (exclusive charter) depending on the vessel age, amenities, and season. Sailing catamarans of equivalent size run USD 1,200–2,200. Superyachts begin around USD 3,500 per day and scale with length and crew.

Agent markup is typically applied above these base rates before quoting the client. Catering, fuel surcharges for longer routes, and marine park fees (mandatory for entry to protected areas like Phi Phi Islands Marine National Park) are usually itemised separately — confirm whether these are included when comparing supplier quotes.

High season pricing (November–April) carries a 15–25% premium over low season. The shoulder months of October and May can offer genuine value for clients with flexible travel dates.

Route planning and itinerary matching

The most requested day routes depart from Ao Po Grand Marina or Yacht Haven Phuket (north), and Chalong Pier (south). Northern departures suit Phang Nga Bay limestone karst and James Bond Island. Southern departures are better positioned for Racha Yai, Coral Island, and Phi Phi day runs.

Liveaboard programs of 3–7 nights extend to the Similan Islands (seasonal, October–May only) and the Mergui Archipelago in Myanmar — the latter requiring additional maritime permits. Lead time for liveaboard itineraries should be a minimum of 45 days, and permits for Mergui require 60 days minimum.

Packaging with ground programs

Yacht charters pair naturally with luxury and celebrations programs — particularly honeymoon and anniversary packages where exclusivity and scenery are the primary drivers. Agents can also layer private island picnic setups, underwater photographers, and sunset cocktail service as add-ons; these are available through an in-destination DMC that has existing supplier relationships.

For clients arriving from Bangkok by air, include transfers from Phuket International Airport to the marina as a booked component — unmanaged transfers are a common breakdown point. The transfers and transport service covers marina pickups with appropriate vehicle types for guests travelling with dive or snorkelling gear.

Registered agents can access vessel specifications, fleet availability, and net rate schedules through Explera Thailand. The team can also arrange site inspections for agents building this product for the first time.

Key operational details

Seasickness is a client management issue that affects satisfaction scores. Motor catamarans in Phang Nga Bay are stable in normal conditions; open-water routes to the outer islands are less predictable April–October. Factor the client profile before routing — adventurous couples handle it differently than families with children.

Sunset charters (typically 16:00–20:00) are excellent add-ons for clients with only one free evening in Phuket; they are priced as half-day charters and require no special preparation.

For high-value clients, this is a product that earns loyalty. Handle the detail correctly and it becomes a signature itinerary component agents repeat across multiple bookings.
