Korea's two flagship convention venues — COEX in Seoul and BEXCO in Busan — handle thousands of international events annually and are well integrated into global MICE infrastructure. For agents and event planners who haven't worked in Korea before, understanding the practical differences between the two venues, their surrounding hospitality ecosystems, and how to navigate procurement is the essential starting point.
COEX, Seoul
COEX operates in the heart of Gangnam, Seoul's primary business district. The complex integrates convention facilities, a major shopping mall, an aquarium, and direct underground connections to the Bongeunsa metro station. Its central location is a significant advantage — attendees can access a wide range of dining, entertainment, and accommodation options within walking distance or a short cab ride.
Venue specifications at a glance: The Convention Hall can accommodate up to 7,000 delegates in a single plenary configuration. The total event floor space exceeds 36,000 square metres, with twenty-four meeting rooms and eight conference halls available for breakout configurations. Simultaneous interpretation is available across multiple channels.
Accommodation: The Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas and InterContinental Seoul COEX are directly connected to the venue via enclosed walkway — a practical advantage during Seoul's cold winters and wet summers. Additional five-star options within a ten-minute drive include the Park Hyatt Seoul and Conrad Seoul.
For groups attending COEX events, coordinating delegate accommodation in Gangnam and managing group transport in a dense urban environment requires a local operations partner. Our MICE and incentives team has established working relationships with COEX's event coordination team and can handle everything from group check-in logistics to post-event dining reservations.
BEXCO, Busan
BEXCO is Korea's second-largest convention centre and sits in Haeundae, Busan's primary beach and upscale leisure district. That location is a meaningful differentiator: conference delegates at BEXCO can walk to the beach, which makes Busan an easier sell for events that include leisure components or spouse programmes.
Venue specifications: BEXCO's Exhibition Hall covers 46,380 square metres — larger than COEX's primary hall — making it better suited to large-scale trade exhibitions and hybrid conference-exhibition events. The Convention Hall accommodates up to 10,000 delegates. Two halls and over fifty meeting rooms allow for complex multi-track programming.
Accommodation: The Westin Chosun Busan and Park Hyatt Busan are the closest luxury options to BEXCO, both in Haeundae. Busan's accommodation market is somewhat less internationally contracted than Seoul's, which means working through a local DMC provides better access to preferred rates and allocation.
Choosing Between the Two
The decision is usually straightforward based on event type:
- COEX suits events where delegate access to Seoul's business district is a functional requirement, or where the venue's urban density is an asset for networking and social programming
- BEXCO suits large-scale exhibitions, events where a beach and leisure setting enhances the delegate experience, or organisations wanting to offer a less familiar Korean destination to repeat-visitor delegates
Some events use both venues across a multi-day programme, with a Busan-Seoul transfer built into the schedule. The KTX high-speed train between Seoul Station and Busan Station takes approximately two hours and twenty minutes — entirely manageable as a mid-conference transit.
Working With a Korea DMC for MICE Events
Venue booking is only one component of a conference operation. Ground logistics — airport transfers for hundreds of delegates, group dining, technical supplier coordination, post-conference tours, and gala dinner venues — require a local partner with established supplier relationships.
Our team handles Korea MICE operations from initial site inspection through to post-event reporting. We work with both COEX and BEXCO event teams and can coordinate transfers and transport for delegate groups of any size.
