Isan: Making the Case for Northeast Thailand to Your Clients

29 April 2026 · Explera Group · 3 min read

Isan — the broad plateau of northeast Thailand covering 20 provinces — accounts for roughly a third of the country's land area and is visited by fewer than five percent of international arrivals. For agents with an adventurous or culturally curious client base, this imbalance is an opportunity. The region offers Khmer temple complexes, one of Thailand's most distinctive regional cuisines, silk weaving traditions, wetland bird sanctuaries, and a pace of travel that is impossible to find in Chiang Mai or Phuket. The challenge is that sourcing infrastructure is thinner, which makes a DMC relationship more valuable, not less.

What Isan offers that other regions don't

Khmer heritage: The Phimai Historical Park (Nakhon Ratchasima) and Phanom Rung Historical Park (Buriram) are the finest Khmer temple complexes in Thailand and rival Angkor in structural quality — without the volume of visitors. Phanom Rung in particular, set on an extinct volcano with full cardinal alignment on the spring and autumn equinoxes, is architecturally exceptional. Clients who have done Angkor Wat will find this genuinely new.

Nong Khai and the Mekong corridor: The stretch of river towns from Nong Khai (opposite Vientiane, Laos) through Mukdahan offers a Mekong-facing travel experience that is unlike any other in Thailand. The Sala Kaew Ku sculpture park outside Nong Khai is one of the most visually striking and unusual sites in Southeast Asia.

Yasothon and Surin: The Surin Elephant Festival (November) is one of the largest elephant events in Thailand, operating at a different scale and atmosphere to the Chiang Mai sanctuary circuit. Yasothon hosts the Rocket Festival (Bun Bang Fai) in May, one of the most authentically local celebrations in the country.

Cuisine: Isan food — som tam (papaya salad), larb, moo ping (grilled pork), sticky rice — is some of the most requested cuisine globally once clients have eaten it. A food-focused Isan itinerary is a legitimate specialist product for culinary tourism buyers.

Practical logistics for agents

Isan is large. A single itinerary cannot cover the region; it requires route planning. The most accessible entry point is Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat), 2.5 hours by rail or road from Bangkok, which anchors the western Isan circuit including Phimai. Khon Kaen is the commercial hub of the region and has domestic air connections from Bangkok (approximately 55 minutes), making it the most practical hub for agents building central Isan programs.

Buriram has a domestic airport (served seasonally) and is the base for the Phanom Rung circuit. Udon Thani (north) has daily domestic flights and serves as the gateway for Nong Khai and the Mekong corridor.

Ground transport within Isan requires a dedicated vehicle — public transport exists but is not compatible with structured touring. A private driver guide for 3–5 days is the standard format. Accommodation is available at three-star and four-star level in the major cities; boutique properties in rural areas are emerging but limited.

Itinerary structures that sell

3-night Korat–Buriram heritage circuit: Bangkok departure by train to Korat; Phimai on day one; Phanom Rung and Prasat Hin Khao Kampaeng Yai on day two; return to Bangkok day three. Compact, high-density heritage itinerary suited to culturally curious FIT clients with limited time.

5-night Khon Kaen–Nong Khai–Udon Thani: Central and northern Isan loop covering silk weaving villages, Mekong riverfront towns, Sala Kaew Ku, and the Ban Chiang UNESCO site. Suited to older travellers or those who have extensively covered central Thailand.

7-night full Isan loop: Best suited to specialist cultural tour groups with an established off-the-beaten-track positioning. Includes Surin, Khmer sites, silk villages, food experiences, and Mekong frontier towns.

For programme development, the tailor-made FIT service is the right entry point — Isan itineraries are by definition bespoke and benefit from DMC expertise in routing and supplier selection.

Our Thailand destination page contextualises Isan within a broader Thailand programme that can combine Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and the northeast in a single itinerary. Contact Explera Thailand for Isan-specific routing proposals and ground operator documentation.

Isan will not suit every client. It suits the ones who come back and ask you to find them somewhere equally real on their next trip.
