An origin trip is not a tasting day, and confusing the two is the most common way this product gets mis-sold. A tasting day is leisure: it sells to a general-interest client, runs on a fixed calendar and works anywhere with a nice room and a knowledgeable host. An origin trip sells to a buyer — a roastery, an importer, a café group, a competition team — and it has to be timed to the harvest and the processing rather than to the brochure. The two are complementary products and our guide to drinks days across the region covers the leisure half.
As of 20 September 2026. Harvest windows move year to year with the weather; confirm the current expectation with the specific estate or cooperative before fixing dates.
Qué lo convierte en otro producto
It is timed to work, not to a calendar. There is no single harvest month to print for any of these markets. A programme built around picking, pulping and drying actually happening is a different thing from a week that suits the brochure, and an empty plantation is a wasted trip for a buyer.
The processing step is the content. Trees photograph well and explain nothing. The mill, the drying patio, the ferment room and the grading table are where a buyer learns something, and a programme that shows those is a different product from one that shows a field.
It ends with a structured tasting hosted by a person who can explain it. That is also the part most often omitted, because it requires a specialist rather than a location.

Qué ofrece cada destino a un comprador
Indonesia is the serious coffee origin in the region and one of the world's major producers, with named origins a specialty buyer will already know — Gayo in Aceh, Mandheling and Lintong in North Sumatra, Java on the Ijen plateau, Toraja in Sulawesi, Kintamani in Bali and Flores around Bajawa. The distinguishing technical feature is wet-hulling, the processing method behind the way Sumatran coffee tastes, and it is the single most interesting thing to show a group that already drinks coffee. Accessibility varies enormously — Kintamani is a comfortable drive from Bali's resorts, Gayo is a genuine journey — and our guide to the origins sets out which suits which buyer, and how to handle the caged-civet question properly.
Japón is the tea and ferment origin: the growing districts around Uji and Shizuoka for tea, and sake, miso and soy breweries for fermentation. Japanese producers are unusually well set up to receive visitors and unusually precise about what they will and will not show, so briefs need to be specific.
Corea offers tea at Boseong and a deep ferment culture — jang, doenjang and kimchi production — that is increasingly what professional buyers come for rather than an afterthought to a city trip.
Tailandia has a northern coffee sector that has moved a long way up the quality ladder in a decade, plus spice and fruit supply chains, and it is the easiest of the four to combine with a mainstream leisure programme.

Cómo construirlo
Ask what the buyer is for before choosing the origin. A roastery group, a barista competition team, a café chain's staff trip and a general-interest couple want four different trips. The origin follows the answer, not the other way round.
One origin, one landscape. Two origins in ten days is a transfer schedule. One origin plus a strong destination is a trip.
Confirm the domestic flights first. Most of these origins need at least one, and the timetable decides the shape of the itinerary.
Treat sourcing as a separate workstream. If the client intends to buy rather than to look, exporters and paperwork have to be arranged in advance; a plantation visit does not produce them by itself.
Preguntas frecuentes
When is the harvest? There is no single answer, in any of these markets. It varies by region and by altitude and moves with the weather, so ask the specific estate or cooperative what they expect this year before fixing dates.
What is wet-hulling and why does it matter? It is the processing method used across much of Sumatra, in which the parchment is removed while the bean is still wet rather than after full drying. It is the main reason Sumatran coffee tastes the way it does, and it is the best thing on the tour.
Is kopi luwak worth including? No. Much of what is sold to visitors comes from civets kept in cages, and a client who finds out afterwards holds the agency responsible for the stop rather than the supplier. The named origins above are more interesting and easier to defend.
Can an origin trip be combined with a leisure programme? Yes, and it usually should be. Thailand and Bali are the easiest to combine; Aceh and Sulawesi are the ones to build a trip around rather than bolt on.
Does an origin trip get the client green coffee? Not by itself. Buying is a separate conversation involving exporters and documentation that has to be set up before travel.
