In Tokyo and Osaka, a train often reaches the next sight faster than a coach can. Traffic, parking limits and narrow streets slow a coach on short hops, so many small and medium groups travel by rail for part of the day. Our Japan team covers tickets, platforms and exits in its guide to taking a group on the subway. Here we look at the decision behind it: which parts of the day go by rail and which stay on the coach.
Rail or Coach, Leg by Leg
- Rail suits groups of up to about twenty people moving between central sights. Larger groups can split into two sub-groups with a guide each.
- The coach suits long transfers, luggage days and guests with limited mobility.
- Timing decides as much as size. Weekday mornings from about 7.30 to 9.30 and evenings from about 17.30 to 19.30 are crowded on the busiest lines, so group moves are planned around them.

What to Settle Before Departure
- Tickets. Rechargeable IC cards such as Suica, PASMO and ICOCA, pre-loaded or on a phone, save time at the gates. Day passes can pay on busy days.
- Rail passes. The Japan Rail Pass covers JR lines only, not the private subway networks.
- Luggage. Large suitcases stay off busy trains and travel separately. Our group luggage guide covers the options.

On the Day
Major stations have dozens of exits, so the guide names the exit number before the group leaves the train and sets meeting points at fixed landmarks. Groups board through two or three doors of the same carriage, not all at one. Phone calls are not made on trains, conversation is kept low, and priority seats are left for older, pregnant and disabled passengers.
