A rafting morning works in a group programme when the river is chosen for the group and the fallback is ready before the day. Bali and Java show how. Our Indonesia team compares the rivers in its briefing on white-water rafting in Bali and Java. Here we look at how a rafting half day is built into any group programme.
Match the River to the Group
In Bali, the Ayung near Ubud is usually described as a beginner-friendly river with a scenic gorge, the right choice for families and mixed groups. The Telaga Waja in east Bali generally has more rapids and suits active groups. In Central Java, rivers near Magelang pair well with a Borobudur morning for groups based in Yogyakarta.
Plan a half day in total: transfers, a briefing, around two hours on the water, then showers and lunch.

Check the Operator, Not Only the Price
- Helmets and life jackets for every guest.
- A trained guide in every raft.
- A proper safety briefing before anyone goes on the water.
- A minimum age, set by each operator, confirmed before the guest list is final.

Plan for the River and the Steps
In the wet season, rain upstream can raise a river within hours. Operators may change the section or cancel on the day, so keep a fallback activity ready and put it in the proposal.
Most rivers also need a walk down and up steep steps to the start or finish. Flag this for guests with limited mobility before they arrive, not at the top of the steps.

What to Promise a Client
Promise a fun, guided morning on the water. Do not promise a specific grade of rapids, because it changes with the water level, and do not promise the trip will run in heavy rain: safety decides on the day. Tell the operator about children and mobility in advance. For a wider look at active programmes, see our Indonesia adventure guide for agents.
