Korea's East Coast After Seoul: Gangneung and Sokcho for Groups

6 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

A Korea east coast group extension gives a programme sea and mountains in two nights, and a clear change of pace after Seoul. Our Korea team sets out the destination detail in its briefing on Gangneung and Sokcho for groups. This note covers what the agent decides: where the coast sits in the programme, how the group gets there and the season it is sold on.

Where the Coast Fits in the Programme

  • After Seoul, before the south. Two nights on the coast break up a city-heavy programme before Gyeongju, Busan or the flight home.
  • One night in each town. Gangneung first, then Sokcho for Seoraksan, so the group never doubles back.
  • Repeat visitors. Guests who have already seen Seoul and Busan get something new without a domestic flight.

Getting There and Moving Between the Towns

  • KTX to Gangneung. The high-speed train from Seoul Station takes about two hours, so the travel day stays short.
  • No train to Sokcho. Sokcho has no KTX station; a coach covers the run north along the coast.
  • One coach for the stay. A coach that meets the group at Gangneung station keeps luggage and timings in one pair of hands.
  • Cable car queues. In the peak autumn weeks the Seoraksan cable car queues are long, so plan an early start.

What the Group Does There

  • Seoraksan National Park. A cable car to the Gwongeumseong viewpoint, easy valley walks and Sinheungsa temple at the park entrance.
  • Gangneung's coffee coast. More than 30 cafés line the beach at Anmok, an easy free hour for any group.
  • Ojukheon. The birthplace of the Joseon scholar Yulgok and his mother Shin Saimdang.
  • Fish markets. Sokcho's markets give the second day its seaside character.
Squid hung out to dry in the sun beside the sea. Seafood is part of a coastal stay, so plan one market or harbour meal for the group.

Sell the Season

  • Autumn. October colour in Seoraksan is the peak, with the busiest weeks.
  • Winter. Snow on the mountains, with the PyeongChang ski area close by.
  • Summer. Beach season along the coast.
  • Sunrise. The coast faces east, so an early sunrise walk is an easy addition.

Why It Matters to the Agent

A coast extension adds two nights of hotel, rail and coach to a Korea programme and gives the group a second picture of the country. It suits first-time and repeat groups, and incentive groups that want a change of scene without a flight.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do groups get from Seoul to Gangneung?

By KTX from Seoul Station, in about two hours. A coach then carries the group along the coast to Sokcho.

How many nights does the east coast need?

Two: one in Gangneung and one in Sokcho, or two in one base, so Seoraksan is not rushed.

When is Seoraksan busiest?

In October, when the autumn colour peaks. Plan an early start for the cable car in those weeks.

Is the east coast only for hikers?

No. The cable car, valley walks, Sinheungsa temple, cafés and markets suit groups who do not hike.
