The Mackenzie Basin around Lake Tekapo is one of the best places in the world to see the southern night sky, and it sits on the main road between Christchurch and Queenstown. The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve was designated in June 2012 with gold-tier status. For clients from the northern hemisphere, the Southern Cross and the Magellanic Clouds are new. Explera DMC New Zealand covers the detail in its Aoraki Mackenzie stargazing guide. These are the points for agents who sell several destinations.
Why the Southern Sky Sells
Most clients from Asia, Europe and North America have never seen the southern sky. That makes a clear night at Lake Tekapo different from a dark-sky night at home, even for clients who have already been stargazing.
- Lake Tekapo (Takapō) is the main base. The University of Canterbury's Mount John Observatory sits on the hill above the lake.
- Twizel and Lake Pukaki add rooms and open views towards Aoraki/Mount Cook.
- Local lighting rules keep the sky dark across the district, so clients should keep outdoor lights low.

The Moon and the Weather Decide the Night
No operator can promise a clear sky. Plan the overnight around the new moon if stargazing is the reason for the trip, and treat it as a highlight rather than a guaranteed show.
- Winter nights (June to August) are long and often clear, but very cold.
- Summer nights are short, so tours start late.
- Autumn and spring give dark skies at a sensible hour.
Building It into a Programme
- Always stay the night. Tours finish late, so do not drive on to Queenstown afterwards.
- Two nights for photo and astronomy groups, to allow for cloud.
- Use the day well. The lakes and walks at Aoraki/Mount Cook keep the stop useful if the night is cloudy.
- Rooms are limited. Large groups may need to split between Tekapo and Twizel.

Combining It with Asia
Japan also has dark-sky places, and our note on stargazing programmes for groups in Japan covers them. A client who has seen the northern sky in Japan can see the southern one in New Zealand. For South Island routing, see our note on Christchurch's long-haul links.
Frequently Asked Questions
When was the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve designated?
In June 2012, with gold-tier status, the highest grade for sky quality.
Is a clear sky guaranteed at Lake Tekapo?
No. Cloud can come in at any time of year, so we place an overnight stay, and two nights for special-interest groups.
Where do groups stay for stargazing?
At Lake Tekapo or Twizel. Rooms are limited, so large groups may need two properties.
