Shiretoko, on the far north-east of Hokkaido, is one of the wildest places in Japan, and it sells best to clients who have already seen Tokyo and Kyoto. It became a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site in 2005 for its forests, sea cliffs and wildlife, including one of the densest brown bear populations in the world. Our Japan team covers the details in its Shiretoko guide for groups. Here we look at how it fits a programme you sell.
Who It Suits
- Repeat visitors to Japan. Clients who want nature rather than cities, and who accept long road days to reach it.
- Nature and photography groups. Sea cliffs, forest lakes and wildlife seen from the water.
- A Hokkaido circuit. Shiretoko pairs with the rest of eastern Hokkaido as one regional programme.
The Season Decides the Product
- Late April to October. Sightseeing boats run from Utoro along the western cliffs from late April to late October, and the longer cruises towards the tip of the peninsula run in the main summer season.
- Late winter. Sea ice from the Sea of Okhotsk can reach the coast, and drift-ice walks and cruises become a separate product with a short season.

The Five Lakes Rules
An elevated boardwalk of about 800 metres leads to the first lake. It is free, open all season and fenced against bears. The ground trail around all five lakes is managed: in the peak bear season, from about 10 May to 31 July, it is open only on guided tours, and at other times visitors attend a short lecture first. We book the tour or the lecture with the rest of the day.
What to Tell Your Clients
- Getting there. Memanbetsu Airport is the usual gateway, about two hours by road from Utoro. Nakashibetsu Airport serves the Rausu side.
- Weather. Boats work under strict safety rules and trips are cancelled in rough weather, so we keep a land alternative.
- Rooms. Hotels in Utoro are limited in summer and need to be held early.
- Wildlife. Bears, deer and seabirds are often seen from the boats, but no sighting can be promised. Clients follow the rules on food, distance and trails, and we brief every group.
