Shirahama: Adding Onsen and Coast to a Kansai Group

9 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

Shirahama, on the south-west coast of Wakayama Prefecture, gives a Kansai programme a hot-spring town and a coastline without a long detour. It is one of Japan's oldest hot-spring resorts and sits on the Kii Peninsula, a natural base for the Kumano Kodo. Our Japan team covers the town in its Shirahama guide for groups. Here we look at how it fits a group you sell.

Where It Fits in a Programme

  • After Osaka. A limited express train runs from Osaka, and a private coach allows stops on the way.
  • Before the Kumano Kodo. It works as a gentler first or last night around a walking programme.
  • By air. Nanki-Shirahama Airport has flights from Tokyo Haneda, so a group can skip the Kansai gateways.

What Groups See

  • A town beach. White sand in the middle of town, easy for a short stroll.
  • Sea cliffs and rock. Senjojiki is a wide shelf of flat rock above the sea, and Sandanbeki has a lift down to a cave.
  • An old coastal bath. Saki-no-yu is an open-air bath set on the rocks by the sea.
  • Engetsu Island. A small island with a round arch worn through it, best at sunset.
Sea cliffs at sunset. The Shirahama coast rewards an evening on the rocks.

Selling the Stay

  • Onsen hotels. Many large hotels have hot-spring baths and can host groups. Bath rules and private options need checking for each client.
  • Seafood dinner. The Kii coast is known for tuna and seafood, which suits a group dinner.
  • Season. Summer weekends and holidays are busy, while spring and autumn are calmer.
  • Pandas. Adventure World's giant pandas returned to China in June 2025, so do not sell them.
