Aoraki / Mount Cook With a Coach Group: The Bridge Limit

13 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

The short answer

A coach group can still walk the Hooker Valley Track at Aoraki / Mount Cook, but not all at once. The Department of Conservation (DOC) is enforcing a 20-person limit on the first swing bridge, with gates planned at each end, so Explera DMC splits groups into smaller walking parties and builds the waiting time into the day.

For most South Island programmes, Aoraki / Mount Cook is one day on a loop that also takes in Christchurch, Lake Tekapo and Queenstown. That day usually rests on one walk, and in 2026 the rules for walking it in a group changed. Our New Zealand team covers the walk in detail in its Hooker Valley Track guide for groups. This note is for agents fitting the day into a wider quote.

What Did DOC Change on the Hooker Valley Track?

DOC announced on 22 September 2026 that it will install self-closing gates at each end of the first swing bridge. Engineers found cable wear on the 47-year-old bridge and recommended enforcing its 20-person limit, after rangers regularly saw more than 40 people on it at once.

  • Rangers at peak times. DOC plans to roster rangers at the bridge during peak periods over summer.
  • A replacement is being studied. DOC is investigating options to replace the bridge within the next few years.
  • The second bridge is new. It is 189 metres long and opened in July 2026; DOC describes it as the longest suspension bridge in New Zealand, and visitor numbers in the valley have risen since.

How Long Should the Day Allow?

DOC gives about 5 km and 90 minutes each way from White Horse Hill car park to Hooker Lake, returning the same way, on gravel with some steps and three swing bridges. With a coach group crossing the first bridge in parties of 20 or fewer, allow extra time on top of the walk itself, and do not plan a long drive straight afterwards.

Should the Programme Stay a Night?

Where the itinerary allows, yes. An overnight near the park gives a second chance at the walk if the first morning is wet, and snow can close State Highway 80 at any time of year. On a tight loop, keep a lower-level option ready so the day still works if the track is not.

Will International Visitors Pay to Enter?

Not yet. DOC lists Aoraki / Mount Cook among four sites where it is investigating access charges for international visitors. No charge is confirmed, so check at quotation rather than building a figure into a long-lead programme.
