Japan's hotels are clean overall, but a TrustYou study of about 3.17 million reviews found bathrooms and showers scored below guest rooms in every hotel class, and luxury ranked only fourth of six for cleanliness. Explera's Japan team therefore checks recent bathroom reviews and refurbishment, not star ratings, before contracting group hotels.
On 9 October 2026 Travel Voice reported on a cleanliness benchmark from the review analytics company TrustYou, covering 669 hotels in Japan. For a group quote, the useful part is not that Japan is clean, which most clients already expect, but where the complaints that do arise tend to gather. Our Japan team sets out the full findings in its note on hotel cleanliness in Japan; this page is the short version for agents building a rooming list.
What Did the Study Measure?
- The sample. About 3.17 million reviews of 669 hotels across six classes, from economy to luxury, written between August 2023 and July 2026.
- The link to ratings. Across 30 major brands and groups, room cleanliness and overall rating moved together, with a correlation of 0.77.
- Housekeeping as a topic. About 13 per cent of reviews, some 425,000, mentioned housekeeping.

Where Do Complaints Gather?
Among comments on each item, the share that was critical was highest for furniture, then shower areas, beds and bathrooms. Bathrooms and showers scored below guest rooms in every class. The luxury class had the highest overall ratings but ranked fourth of six for cleanliness, so a higher category does not by itself buy a cleaner room.
What Should Agents Check Before Contracting?
- Read recent reviews on bathrooms, not the star rating. One tired bathroom on a group floor generates more feedback than a small room.
- Ask which room types were refurbished last, and whether the work reached the bathrooms.
- Brief clients on unit baths. Many city hotels use a compact moulded bathroom: clean and practical, but small.
- Confirm the housekeeping policy on multi-night stays. Some hotels clean daily; others let guests skip a day. The tour leader should know how to request towels or extra cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are hotels in Japan clean?
Generally yes. The study broadly supports Japan's reputation; complaints focus on bathrooms, showers and furniture rather than the room as a whole.
Does booking a luxury hotel guarantee the cleanest room?
Not in this study. Luxury had the highest overall ratings but ranked fourth of six classes for cleanliness.
Why do bathrooms matter so much for groups?
Every guest uses them daily, and small faults are easy to notice. Bathrooms and showers scored below guest rooms in every class the study covered.
What does Explera check for a group?
Recent reviews on cleanliness and bathrooms, the latest refurbished room types, and each hotel's housekeeping policy for multi-night stays, before the hotels are contracted.
