Auckland City Centre by Rail: What Changes for Groups

14 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

The short answer

The City Rail Link opened under the Auckland city centre on 13 September 2026, with new stations at Te Waihorotiu, Karanga-a-Hape and Maungawhau. For group programmes, Explera DMC's New Zealand team keeps airport transfers and touring on coaches and uses the train for clients' free time, checking the timetable while it builds up to full service.

Auckland is the usual gateway for New Zealand programmes, and most groups spend at least one night in the city centre. Our New Zealand team sets out what the new line means in its City Rail Link notes for groups. This page is the short version for agents planning a group stay.

What Opened Under the Auckland City Centre?

Auckland Transport confirmed the main facts before opening:

  • Passenger services began on Sunday 13 September 2026, with the first weekday timetable from Monday 14 September.
  • A 3.45 km twin-tunnel railway now runs under the city centre.
  • Three new stations opened: Te Waihorotiu, Karanga-a-Hape and Maungawhau.
  • Trains run through the city centre instead of ending at Waitematā station.

Is the Timetable Final?

Not yet. 1News reported that the network opened on a reduced "transitional" timetable, and that Auckland Transport has committed to a full timetable within six months of opening. Check the current timetable close to travel before you suggest the train in a client itinerary.

How Does Rail Change Free Time in the Auckland City Centre?

  • Free time is easier. Clients staying in the city centre can reach midtown and Karangahape Road by train.
  • Transfers stay by coach. There is no train to Auckland Airport, so arrivals, departures and hotel moves stay on a coach with the luggage.
  • Touring stays by coach. Day trips out of the city still run by coach.
