Tokyo Sushi Bus for Groups: Seats, Timing and Fit

14 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

The short answer

Since 10 October 2026 a converted double-decker called SUSHI BUS has taken 20 diners at a time on a loop of about 70 minutes around central Tokyo, starting near Tokyo Station. Explera DMC's Japan team treats the Tokyo sushi bus for groups as a short add-on for small parties, not as the group's main dinner.

The Tokyo sushi bus for groups is a small product with a hard ceiling: twenty seats. That shapes every decision an agent makes about it, from which clients to offer it to, through how to split a party, to what goes in the rest of the day. Our Japan team has written up how the bus works in its note on Tokyo's conveyor-belt sushi bus; this page looks at it from the side of an agent planning a group programme.

What Is the Tokyo Sushi Bus?

  • The vehicle. An open-top double-decker, converted and painted to look like a piece of tuna sushi. A clear roof closes when it rains.
  • The meal. Sushi is made in a kitchen on the lower deck and sent up by a small lift to a conveyor lane beside the 20 upper-deck seats. It is all-you-can-eat, with drinks included.
  • The route. A loop of about 70 minutes around central Tokyo, starting and ending at a car park near Tokyo Station.
  • The dates. Bookings opened on 30 September 2026 and the service started on 10 October 2026.
  • Who runs it. SUSHI BUS Co. plans and sells it, WILLER ACROSS supplies and converted the vehicle, and a separate company operates the bus day to day.

How Does a Group Fit Into Twenty Seats?

  • Small parties first. A family, a small incentive winners' group or a VIP side programme fits in one departure.
  • Larger groups split. A party of more than 20 needs two departures, so the rest of the day has to absorb two start times. Whole-bus private hire has not been announced, and we ask the operator group by group.
  • Locals are booking too. The operator says the product is aimed at international visitors, yet about 70 per cent of customers in the first days of booking were Japanese. Seats are not reserved for overseas groups, so confirm early.
  • More buses later. The operator plans to add vehicles during 2027; until then, capacity is one bus.

Where Does It Belong in a Programme?

  • An arrival-day activity. A seated city drive with food suits a first afternoon in Tokyo, when clients are tired but want to see the city.
  • Not the welcome dinner. It is a novelty, not a sushi counter. For a group dinner we still recommend a restaurant with a private room.
  • Timing matters. A bus cannot wait for latecomers, so we set the meeting time and the walk from the hotel with a margin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can the Tokyo sushi bus take?

Twenty per departure, all seated on the upper deck beside the conveyor lane. A group of more than 20 needs two departures.

Where does the sushi bus start?

At a car park near Tokyo Station, where the loop of about 70 minutes also ends. We confirm the exact meeting point and arrival time when we book.

Can the sushi bus handle allergies and religious diets?

The operator says it can accommodate allergies and religious dietary restrictions. We check each client's needs with the operator before confirming the booking.

Can a group book the whole bus?

Private hire of a whole bus has not been announced. We ask the operator for each group and plan two departures if a buyout is not possible.
