Shuri Castle Reopens: Planning Okinawa Group Visits

5 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

The rebuilt main hall of Shuri Castle in Naha opens to the public from noon on 23 November 2026, after a completion ceremony on 22 November. The hall burned down in October 2019. For a group, the key fact is not the opening day: the operator accepts no group visits to the interior from 23 November to 6 December 2026. Our Japan team covers the site itself in its briefing on the Shuri Castle reopening. Here we look at what the rules mean for a group quote.

The Rules That Shape a Group Booking

  • No groups in the opening fortnight. Group visits to the interior are not accepted from 23 November to 6 December 2026, when the operator expects heavy crowds.
  • A lottery from 7 December. Group entry is then allocated by lottery through the operator's group reservation form, for set dates and times.
  • Reservations for everyone. The interior of the main hall needs an advance reservation, and entry numbers are limited.
  • New admission fees. Admission was revised with the reopening. We confirm the rate when we book.

Timing a Group Programme

  • Late November departures. A group in Okinawa before 7 December can still walk the grounds, gates and viewpoints, but not enter the main hall. Say so in the proposal.
  • December and later. Apply early, and hold a second date in case the lottery does not give the first choice.
  • Fit it to the flight. Shuri is in Naha, close to the airport, so a half-day visit suits an arrival or departure day.

Building the Day Around It

  • Culture with the beach. Most Okinawa groups come for the resorts. A morning at Shuri gives the programme a cultural anchor.
  • Add a craft. A pottery or textile session in Naha rounds out a culture day.
  • A wet-weather option. An indoor visit makes Shuri useful on a rainy day, once the slot is booked.
