Abel Tasman Coast Tours for Groups: A Note for Agents

7 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

Abel Tasman tours for groups are a coast day, not a mountain day. Abel Tasman National Park sits at the top of New Zealand's South Island, about an hour's drive from Nelson. There is no road along its coast, so groups arrive by water taxi or cruise and then walk, paddle or stay on the boat. Explera DMC New Zealand covers the detail in its Abel Tasman and Nelson Tasman planning guide. These are the points for agents who sell several destinations.

How Groups Reach the Coast

The two gateways are Kaiteriteri and Mārahau. The Department of Conservation (DOC) gives the road distances from Nelson as 61 km to Kaiteriteri and 67 km to Mārahau. From there, water taxis run north along the coast to the bays, but DOC says they go no further north than Tōtaranui.

For a group, the boat is the timetable. The last pick-up of the day decides how long clients can spend on the track, so we confirm boat capacity and collection times at quotation.

Three Ways to Fill the Day

  • A walk between two bays. Most visitors walk only one section of the Abel Tasman Coast Track, with a water taxi at each end.
  • Guided sea kayaking. It suits active clients. Guides decide on the day whether the wind and sea allow it.
  • A cruise with short landings. It suits older clients and mixed groups who want the coast without a long walk.

Summer, December to February, is the busy season, so boats and kayaks need booking early. Spring and autumn are quieter.

Where It Fits on a Longer Trip

Nelson is the usual base, with domestic flights and a road link of about two hours to the Cook Strait ferry at Picton. That makes the region a natural stop between the North Island and the South Island's West Coast.

For clients flying in from Asia, a gentle coast day is a good counterweight to long drives and alpine stops. Our note on Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers for groups covers the West Coast further south.
