Hobbiton and Waitomo are both in the Waikato, south of Auckland, and they fit best on the coach day between Auckland and Rotorua. Why Groups Ask for It
Hobbiton is one of the most requested North Island visits for groups from Asia, Europe and North America, because so many clients know the films. Waitomo adds something they have not seen before: glowworms, a species found only in New Zealand.
- The Hobbiton Movie Set is on a working farm near Matamata. Visits are by guided tour only, and tours finish at the Green Dragon Inn on the set.
- The Waitomo Glowworm Caves end with a quiet boat ride under the glowworms. Many of the guides are descendants of the Māori chief who first explored the caves with a surveyor in 1887.
- No photography in the glowworm grotto. Brief clients before the day, so nobody is surprised.
Timed Entries Decide the Day
Both visits have set departure times and set group sizes. A full coach may be split across two departures, and that changes the whole day.
- Book both as soon as the itinerary is confirmed, especially for December to February and school holidays.
- Allow time at each stop for the walk from the coach to the meeting point.
- Plan lunch around the entries, not the other way round.
One Long Day or Two Easy Ones
- One day, Auckland to Rotorua via both. Possible for fit, keen groups, but it is ten hours or more with driving.
- Two days, with an overnight near Waitomo. Our usual advice for families, older travellers and large coaches.
- Hobbiton only, for clients who are short on time or not interested in caves.
Hobbiton also runs special evenings. Its Christmas evenings are on 18 and 19 December 2026, and they sell out early.
