Thailand's Free Transit Tours: How Agents Should Plan Long Connections

7 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

Thailand plans free short tours for international transit passengers with layovers of about six to eight hours, starting with a pilot expected in early 2027 at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket and Krabi airports, according to a Nation Thailand report of 6 October 2026. Our Thailand team sets out the announcement in detail in its briefing on Thailand's free transit tours. Here we look at what it means for agents who route groups and individual clients through Asian hubs.

What Has Been Announced

  • A memorandum with six partners. The Transport Ministry signed it with the Department of Airports, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, Thai Airways International, the Airlines Association of Thailand, the Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel Company and Kasetsart University's engineering faculty.
  • Three kinds of tour. Culture and history, Thai food and street food, and health and wellness such as spa treatments and Thai massage.
  • Free at first. The tours are to be offered free as an incentive, and TAT hopes to bring about one in ten Suvarnabhumi transit passengers out of the airport.

What Is Still Missing

  • Immigration. A passenger who leaves the airport enters Thailand, so plan on the normal entry rules, including the visa exemption or a visa and the Thailand Digital Arrival Card, until the scheme says otherwise.
  • Booking. No operator, registration channel or way to reserve a place has been named.
  • A start date. "Early 2027" is a target for a pilot, not a launch date.

How to Plan Long Connections Now

Do not sell the free tour yet, and do not list it in documents as an inclusion. A shared programme cannot wait for one late passenger, so it will suit independent travellers with a long daytime connection better than groups, families or incentive delegates. For those clients, keep booking a private layover programme with a driver and a guide, timed against the onward flight rather than a tour schedule. The same logic applies to any long connection we plan, including the Incheon stopover packages our Korea team runs.
