Cathedral Cove Group Tours: A Note for Agents

9 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

Cathedral Cove group tours depend on one thing agents can control: selling the beach with a fallback ready. The Department of Conservation (DOC) reopened walking access to Mautohe Cathedral Cove in December 2024 after cyclone damage. It closes the track after heavy rain, so a confirmed booking can still meet a closed track on the day. Explera DMC New Zealand sets out the detail in its Cathedral Cove planning guide. These are the points for agents who sell several destinations.

What to Tell Your Clients Before Departure

DOC closes the track under a trigger plan when heavy rain raises landslide and rockfall risk, and it reopens only after an inspection. An orange or red weather warning for Hāhei also closes it, and the shuttles do not run. The track closed in April 2025 and again after the January 2026 storms, reopening on 30 January 2026.

Put this in your terms and conditions: the cove is subject to weather and to DOC. Do not sell it as a guaranteed stop.

Parking, Walking and Tides

For a group, the working points are short:

  • No parking at Grange Road. The track entrance there is for drop-off and pick-up only.
  • The free Hāhei Visitor Car Park is the main option. DOC lists a 30-minute walk from it to the entrance, mostly uphill with little shade, or clients can take the park-and-ride shuttle.
  • Tides matter. At high tide the beach can be cut off from the track, so plan the visit around low tide.
  • Bring water. There is no drinking water on the track or beach, and no bins.

Bookings are not required for the walk, which makes timing the only thing to manage.

A Fallback Worth Pricing

Agents who add a second option avoid refund disputes. Good alternatives on the peninsula are a boat or kayak trip where operators run, a beach and village afternoon, or a drive across to the Thames coast.

The nearby Gemstone Bay track and the Hāhei Beach Short Walk reroute are in doubt after the January 2026 storm, so do not sell them. DOC is also investigating a possible access charge for international visitors at Cathedral Cove and three other sites. The law must pass first, and no date or amount is set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cathedral Cove open to groups?

Yes, the track reopened in December 2024. DOC closes it after heavy rain and reopens it after an inspection.

Where do groups park?

Not at Grange Road, which is drop-off only. The free Hāhei Visitor Car Park is the main option.

Do clients need to book the walk?

No. DOC does not require bookings, but clients should check tides and closures first.
