The Yaeyama Islands are the part of Okinawa that most of your clients will not have seen, and they work best sold as an extension to a trip that already includes Naha or the Japanese mainland. Lonely Planet put Okinawa on its Best in Travel 2027 list in September 2026, which gives agents a fresh reason to raise it. Our Japan team describes the islands in its Ishigaki and Yaeyama guide for groups. Here we look at how an agent can build and sell the extension.
Why Agents Sell It as an Extension
- A different Japan. Yaeyama lies at the far south-west of the country, closer to Taiwan than to Okinawa's main island, so it contrasts strongly with a temple-and-city itinerary.
- Easy to attach. Ishigaki has direct flights from Tokyo and Osaka, so it can follow a mainland programme or a few nights in Naha.
- A clear story. Island hopping, mangrove rivers and a World Heritage listing give the add-on a reason to exist.
How the Islands Divide the Days
- Ishigaki. The base, with hotels, restaurants and the airport. Kabira Bay is the classic viewpoint, and swimming is not permitted there.
- Taketomi. A short ferry ride of about ten minutes from Ishigaki, known for low red-tile houses and water-buffalo carts.
- Iriomote. Jungle and mangrove, listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site since 2021, with river cruises and guided kayak trips.

What to Tell Clients About Iriomote
Iriomote manages visitor numbers. Some restricted trails and river routes have daily caps and need a registered guide, so a client cannot simply turn up and join them. The practical rule for an agent is to ask for the Iriomote day early and to keep a river cruise as the fallback if a cap is full. Do not promise a named trail until it is confirmed.
Season and Weather Buffer
- Spring and early summer. Warm sea and long days, with a short rainy spell usually in May and June.
- Summer to autumn. Typhoon season. Ferries can stop for a day or more, so build in a spare day and a flexible onward flight.
- Winter. Milder, windier and cloudier, with quieter days and lower demand.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do groups reach the Yaeyama Islands?

Can a large group visit Iriomote?
Yes, with planning. Some trails and rivers have daily caps and registered guides, so book them early and keep a backup.
Should agents allow for typhoons?
Yes, from summer to autumn. A spare day and a flexible flight protect the programme.
