Marlborough Sounds group tours turn the Cook Strait ferry arrival into a stay. The Sounds are a maze of drowned river valleys at the top of the South Island, reached from Picton and Havelock. Groups use them for a day on the water, a section of the Queen Charlotte Track with luggage moved by boat, or a mussel cruise. Explera DMC New Zealand covers the routing in its Marlborough Sounds planning guide. These are the points for agents who sell several destinations.
Why Sell a Night or Two Here
Many clients see the Sounds only from the deck of the ferry into Picton. Most programmes give them one or two nights after the Cook Strait crossing, which turns the view into a stay. Distances look short on a map but are long by road, so boats do much of the work. Water taxis and launches connect many lodges and walking tracks.

The Queen Charlotte Track in Group Terms
The Department of Conservation (DOC) gives the Queen Charlotte Track as 73.5 km one way, from Meretoto / Ship Cove to Anakiwa. Walkers usually take three to five days, and mountain bikers two to three. It suits mixed groups because it can be cut down:
- Day walks: a water taxi drops clients at one bay and collects them at another, so they walk one scenic section and return to Picton the same day.
- Multi-day walks: boats carry bags between lodges, so walkers carry only a day pack.
- Land pass: sections that cross private land need a Queen Charlotte Track Land Cooperative pass, which should be named in the quotation.
Confirm operators, availability and terms at quotation.
Water Days and Mussels
- Cruises and water taxis from Picton run to Ship Cove and the outer bays.
- The Pelorus mail boat sails from Havelock on set days, so check the timetable for each date.
- Green-lipped mussels: Havelock calls itself the green-lipped mussel capital, and mussel cruises visit the farms.
- Wildlife such as dolphins and seabirds is often seen, but sightings are never guaranteed.

Where It Fits in a South Island Programme
The Sounds sit between Wellington and the rest of the South Island. A common pattern is the ferry, one or two nights in Picton or a lodge in the Sounds, then Marlborough wine country, Nelson or Kaikōura. The Cook Strait crossing depends on the weather, so leave some slack on either side of it.
