Matsuyama group tours give a Shikoku leg a simple base: an original castle in the city centre and Dogo Onsen ten minutes away by tram. Ehime's capital has domestic flights from Tokyo and Osaka, and the Shiokaze limited express from Okayama takes about two hours forty minutes. Our Japan team describes the city in its Matsuyama and Dogo Onsen guide. This note is for agents deciding how to fit it into a group programme.
Why It Works for Groups
- Two nights is enough. One evening in Dogo, one day for the castle and the city, and a half-day to Ozu or Uchiko.
- Short transfers. Matsuyama's streetcars link the castle area, the city centre and Dogo, and a coach covers the rest.
- A natural route. Hiroshima, the Shimanami Kaido by coach to Imabari, two nights in Matsuyama, then on to Kochi or Takamatsu.

Dogo Onsen: Plan the Bath, Not Just the Hotel
- Two buildings. Dogo Onsen Honkan dates from 1894, is an Important Cultural Property, and reopened fully on 11 July 2024 after conservation work. Asuka-no-Yu, an annex opened in 2017 in the same historic style, has larger baths and private rooms.
- Timed entry. The Honkan's baths are small, so larger groups are split into timed visits or use Asuka-no-Yu instead.
- Tattoos. Check each bath's policy in advance for guests with tattoos.
The Castle and the Half-Day Options
- Matsuyama Castle. Its keep is one of the twelve original keeps that survive in Japan. A ropeway and a chairlift run up the hill, which keeps it within reach for most guests.
- Ozu. About an hour south, with a castle keep rebuilt in wood using traditional methods and the riverside villa Garyu Sanso.
- Uchiko. A preserved street of white-plaster merchant houses. Its kabuki theatre, Uchiko-za, closed in September 2024 for seismic renovation, and published reopening estimates range from late 2028 to spring 2029. Do not sell the theatre interior until the date is confirmed.
