Eastern Hokkaido group tours suit clients who have already done the Golden Route: Kushiro is about 1 hour 40 minutes by air from Haneda, and three nights cover the wetland, Lake Akan and the caldera lakes. In winter the red-crowned cranes add the reason many clients travel. Our Japan team describes the region in its Kushiro and Lake Akan guide. This note is for agents fitting it into a group programme.
Why It Works for Groups
- One flight in. Kushiro Airport has direct domestic flights from Haneda, so the region does not need a long rail day.
- Three nights is enough. One night near Kushiro and two at Lake Akan cover the main sights; add two more for Shiretoko.
- Space and quiet. Open wetland, lakes and Ainu culture give a different Japan from the big cities.

What to Brief Before Travel
- Kushiro Wetland. Japan's largest wetland, seen from observation decks and boardwalks. Mornings are quietest.
- The crane season. At the Tsurui-Ito Tancho Sanctuary, feeding runs from about mid to late November until late March, and up to about 300 cranes may come in. Numbers vary from day to day, so present the cranes as likely, not guaranteed.
- Lake Akan. Akanko Ainu Kotan has craft shops, Ainu food and a theatre for traditional dance. Marimo, the round algae balls protected as a Special Natural Monument, are seen at a lake centre.
- Lake Mashu and Lake Kussharo. Lake Mashu is seen only from rim viewpoints and is often in fog. At Kussharo, Japan's largest caldera lake, guests can dig into warm sand at Sunayu.
- Winter roads. Coach days are long and roads can be icy, so keep driving days short and leave a weather margin.
