Why It Works for Groups
- An easy walk for everyone. At Woljeongsa a level path of about a kilometre runs through some 1,700 tall fir trees to the temple.
- A longer option for walkers. The Seonjae-gil trail joins Woljeongsa and Sangwonsa, about 9 km and three hours on foot.
- A calm day between busy ones. It sits well between Seoul and the east coast or the Pyeongchang ski resorts.
How to Plan the Day
- By KTX. Jinbu (Odaesan) station on the Gangneung line opened in December 2017, before the 2018 Winter Olympics. A coach meets the train.
- By coach. The drive from Seoul takes around two and a half to three hours, depending on traffic.
- Split the group. Walkers take Seonjae-gil while the others ride the coach to Sangwonsa and meet them there.
- The bell. Sangwonsa keeps a bronze bell cast in 725, a National Treasure and one of the oldest in Korea.
- Winter. Snow and ice can close or slow parts of the trail, so we check conditions before the walk.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Odaesan suitable for senior groups?
Yes. The fir forest path is flat and well kept. Guests who do not want the long trail can go by coach between the temples.
Can a group do Odaesan as a day trip from Seoul?
Yes, by KTX to Jinbu or by coach. An overnight in Gangneung or Pyeongchang gives a more relaxed pace.
Can groups stay at the temple?
Woljeongsa runs temple-stay programmes. We confirm space and the programme for the group before the itinerary is final.
