New Zealand Group Bookings: What Sells Out First

13 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

The short answer

In a New Zealand group programme, Department of Conservation (DOC) Great Walks huts sell out first. Bookings open each May, staggered by track, and the Milford Track sold out in 34 minutes in May 2026. Explera DMC holds huts and peak-week lodges first, then city rooms and ferry vehicle space, then coaches and day tours.

Agents who quote several destinations in one programme usually work back from flights and hotels. In New Zealand the order is different, because a few parts of a programme have a fixed booking day and sell out within minutes. Our New Zealand team sets out the full calendar in its group booking lead times guide. This note is the short version for agents building the New Zealand leg.

Which Part of a New Zealand Programme Sells Out First?

Huts and campsites on DOC's Great Walks. For the 2026/27 season, with stays from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, DOC opened bookings track by track between 12 and 21 May 2026, at 9.30 am New Zealand time. The Milford Track opened on 13 May.

  • Milford Track: DOC reported that it sold out in 34 minutes, with a peak of 13,500 users online.
  • Last summer: DOC said Milford Track and Abel Tasman Coast Track huts both reached about 95 per cent occupancy.
  • After a sell-out: DOC suggests checking regularly for cancellations, so a missed date is not always final.

For a walking group, the hut dates fix the rest of the programme. Confirm them first, then build flights and hotels around them.

Is the Tongariro Northern Circuit Open This Summer?

DOC said on 4 September 2026 that the full Tongariro Northern Circuit will run as a loop this summer, with the Mangatepopo Track on course to reopen. The new Oturere Hut and campsite open for bookings from 18 December 2026. DOC said it would email visitors whose bookings were affected; they can change them or ask for a full refund. Check DOC's page before quoting the circuit.

What Comes After the Huts?

  • Peak-week lodges. December to February and the January school holidays are the tightest weeks, and small lodges have few rooms.
  • Release dates. A held block of rooms goes back to the property if it is not confirmed by the release date. Ask for that date in writing, together with the rooming-list deadline.
  • Ferry vehicle space. On summer Cook Strait sailings, the space for a vehicle runs short before passenger seats do. Book the vehicle with the passengers.
  • Small aircraft and helicopters. Seats are few, so a large group may need several flights.

How Should a Multi-Destination Quote Be Ordered?

Treat the New Zealand leg as having its own critical path. Hold huts and peak lodges first, then city rooms and ferry vehicle space, then coaches, guides and day experiences. Confirm cancellation terms and release dates at quotation for every supplier.
