Japan Group Hotel Blocks: Where Bedbanks and OTAs Stop

14 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

The short answer

Japanese hotels sell to overseas buyers mainly through overseas online travel agencies, bedbanks and travel companies, and a 2026 JATA survey puts overseas OTAs first for lodging operators. Explera DMC's Japan team sees those channels working for one or two rooms; Japan group hotel blocks, with release dates, rooming lists and meals, are still contracted hotel by hotel.

Japan group hotel blocks do not come from the same shelf as a two-night city break. Two pieces of trade news from late September and early October 2026 show how Japanese hotels now reach buyers abroad, and why a group still needs a contract rather than a click. Our Japan team covers the detail in its note on how Japan's hotels reach overseas buyers; this page is the short version for agents who sell group programmes.

Which Channels Do Japanese Hotels Use?

  • Overseas OTAs first. In the fifth inbound survey by the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA), carried out by JTB Research & Consulting with 1,096 responses, 71 per cent of lodging operators named overseas online travel agencies among their inbound channels.
  • Travel companies close behind. Overseas travel companies came second at 64 per cent and Japanese travel agencies third at 57 per cent.
  • Staff are short. Labour shortages were the most common problem across all respondents, at 37 per cent.

What Does a Bedbank Add?

Rakuten Travel Xchange, the Singapore-based wholesale arm of the Rakuten Group, told Travel Voice that it handles more than 500,000 hotels and over 200,000 vacation rentals, sells into about 200 countries, and earns half its revenue from Rakuten Travel inventory sourced from Japan and East Asia. It sells through an API, an agent portal and white-label websites, and says it wants to help ryokan sell abroad. For an agent, that means more Japanese rooms on screen, one or two at a time.

Why Do Japan Group Hotel Blocks Need Contracting?

  • Release dates and terms. A group of twenty needs an allotment with its own release schedule, deposit and cancellation terms, which a per-room rate does not carry.
  • Rooming lists and meals. Twin and triple splits, dinner times and dietary needs are agreed with the hotel, not selected from a menu.
  • Ryokan detail. Room types, futon or beds, and meal plans vary by inn, and we confirm them in Japanese before quoting.
  • Short-staffed hotels. Early check-in, luggage handling and group dinners need arranging in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which channel do Japanese hotels use most for inbound guests?

In JATA's fifth inbound survey, published in September 2026, 71 per cent of lodging operators named overseas online travel agencies, the most common answer, ahead of overseas and Japanese travel companies.

What is Rakuten Travel Xchange?

The wholesale travel business of the Rakuten Group, based in Singapore. It distributes hotel and vacation-rental inventory, much of it from Japan and East Asia, to travel companies through an API, an agent portal and white-label websites.

Can a group be booked through a bedbank?

A few rooms can. Group blocks with release dates, rooming lists and meal arrangements are usually contracted directly with each hotel, which is the work a DMC does.

Does Explera contract ryokan for groups?

Yes. Our Japan team confirms room types, meal plans and dinner times with each inn and holds the rooms against the programme.
