Rugby World Cup 2027 Groups: Planning a New Zealand Leg

15 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

The short answer

Rugby World Cup 2027 is played in Australia from 1 October to 13 November 2027, with 52 matches in seven host cities and none in New Zealand. Explera DMC's New Zealand team plans a New Zealand leg for rugby groups, fitted before the tournament, between the pool stage and the round of 16, or after the final.

Rugby World Cup 2027 gives agents a fixed reason to sell a long-haul trip to rugby clubs, supporters' groups and corporate hospitality buyers. Our New Zealand team covers the tournament in its notes on adding New Zealand to a Rugby World Cup trip. This page is the short version for agents who sell group travel across our destinations.

What Are the Key Tournament Dates?

  • The tournament. 1 October to 13 November 2027, with 24 teams and 52 matches.
  • The host cities. Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Sydney and Townsville. No match is played in New Zealand.
  • The opening match. Australia play Hong Kong China at Perth Stadium on 1 October.
  • The knockout stage. The last pool matches are on 17 October and the round of 16 is on 23 and 24 October. Both semi-finals, on 5 and 6 November, and the final, on 13 November, are at Stadium Australia in Sydney.

Where Does New Zealand Play in the Pool Stage?

New Zealand are in a pool with Australia, Chile and Hong Kong China. The official schedule lists New Zealand against Chile in Perth on 2 October, against Australia in Sydney on 9 October and against Hong Kong China in Melbourne on 15 October.

Knockout fixtures depend on results. A group that follows one team can fix its pool-stage dates now, but not its later dates until the pool stage ends.

When Does a New Zealand Leg Fit?

  • Before the tournament. Late September is spring in New Zealand. Check the 2027 school holidays before fixing a pre-tournament programme.
  • Between the stages. There are five clear days between the last pool match on 17 October and the round of 16 on 23 October. A short New Zealand stay can fit there for a group with no match in that window.
  • After the final. Mid-November is late spring, and a post-tournament programme can run as long as the group wants.

How Should Agents Quote It?

  • Match dates first. Confirm how the group's match tickets are held, then fix the New Zealand dates around them.
  • Air across the Tasman early. We request and coordinate group air as soon as the match dates are known. The agency or its consolidator issues the tickets.
  • Keep the legs separate. Quote the New Zealand leg apart from the Australian programme, so a change in match dates moves only one part of the trip.
  • Plan each destination on its own terms. Seasons, holidays and capacity differ in every country we cover, so we quote each one on its own rules.
