Calendarios festivos de Asia: las fechas fijan su tarifa

20 September 2026 · Explera DMC · 4 min read

Most agents plan Asia around the weather and are then surprised by the price. The rain charts are the easy part and widely published. What actually empties a hotel's inventory and doubles a coach rate is the destination's own population going on holiday at the same time — and those dates follow national and religious calendars that have nothing to do with the northern-hemisphere holiday season your client is booking from.

A week that looks perfect on a climate chart can be the single worst week of the year to move a group through it.

Por qué los picos nacionales superan la estacionalidad internacional

An international peak spreads across months and across a whole region. A domestic peak is concentrated — often into a single week — and it is absolute, because the entire domestic market is trying to travel at once. Trains sell out, domestic air prices multiply, hotels in leisure destinations fill with residents rather than visitors, and staff take their own leave.

The three effects an agent should price separately:

  • Capacity disappears rather than getting expensive first. There is a point at which the answer is simply no.
  • Rates move on the domestic curve, not the international one, so a quote built from last month's numbers is wrong.
  • Movement slows. Roads, stations and airports are congested by people who are not your clients, which lengthens every transfer in the itinerary.
A domestic peak is concentrated into days rather than spread across months, and capacity vanishes before price moves.

En qué se diferencian los cuatro destinos

Japón has the most concentrated domestic peaks of the four — clustered runs of public holidays plus the new-year period, when the whole country moves at once. These are not weeks to run a group through on a tight schedule at any price. They are, however, superb weeks to watch if the programme is cultural rather than logistical, provided everything is booked absurdly early.

Corea concentrates around its two major lunar-calendar holidays, when domestic travel spikes hard and, importantly, many businesses close. The closure effect matters as much as the capacity one: an itinerary full of shut doors is a worse outcome than an expensive one.

Tailandia layers a national festival calendar over an international high season that is already busy, and the festival dates move year to year because several follow the lunar calendar. Some of these are the reason to come rather than the reason to avoid — but they need to be a deliberate choice with the capacity booked accordingly.

Indonesia carries both a national holiday calendar and religious observances that shift through the solar year, and the effect is very different between Bali and the rest of the country. Planning Indonesia on a single national calendar is the classic error.

The common factor: several of the biggest dates in all four destinations are set on lunar or religious calendars and therefore move every year. A planning document with fixed dates in it goes stale annually and quietly.

¿Evitar o aprovechar?

The reflex is to steer clients away from every peak, and that is often wrong. A festival is frequently the most memorable thing the client will see, and there are programmes worth building specifically around one.

The honest test is what the trip is for. A multi-city itinerary with tight connections, a corporate incentive with fixed meeting times, or anything involving domestic flights should avoid the peak outright. A single-base cultural trip, where the group stays put and the festival comes to them, can be exactly the week to choose — with accommodation contracted far earlier than usual and expectations set about crowds.

What does not work is the middle: a normal touring itinerary that happens to overlap a peak because nobody checked.

Cómo lo gestiona Explera

We hold the current-year calendars for all four destinations and flag the collision at enquiry rather than at contracting, which is when it is still free to move. Where a client wants the festival, we contract accommodation early and build the programme to sit still rather than to move.

Send the Explera trade desk your proposed window before you quote it, and we will tell you what else is happening in the destination those days. For the transfer-time consequences, our ground transport rules guide covers why congestion lengthens a day more than distance does.

A festival week suits a trip that stays put and fails a trip that has to move.

Preguntas frecuentes

Why are domestic holidays more disruptive than international high season?

Because they are concentrated into days rather than spread across months, and the entire domestic market moves at once. Capacity runs out before price moves, so the problem often presents as unavailability rather than cost.

Do the major dates fall on the same days each year?

Several do not. Lunar-calendar and religious observances shift annually across all four destinations, which is why a planning document with fixed dates becomes wrong without anyone noticing.

Should I always avoid a festival week?

No. A single-base cultural trip can be the best possible use of one. Avoid it for multi-city itineraries, tight connections, domestic flights and anything with fixed meeting times.

How far ahead should a group book into a peak?

Considerably further than normal, and the constraint is accommodation rather than ground services. If a peak week is the deliberate choice, treat contracting as the first action rather than a later one.

Do businesses close during these periods?

In Korea and Japan, meaningfully so around the major holidays. An itinerary can be technically deliverable and still disappoint because the things in it are shut, which is a separate check from capacity.
