Selling Japan to Bonsai and Koi Clubs: A Hobby Group Brief

5 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

Hobby clubs are small groups with a clear reason to travel, and for bonsai and koi enthusiasts Japan is the place they most want to see. These clients know their subject well. They want real access to growers and breeders, not only a garden walk. Our Japan team covers the places and seasons in its guide to bonsai and nishikigoi tours. Here we look at how to find, sell and plan these trips as a travel agent.

Two Places to Build the Trip Around

  • Omiya Bonsai Village, Saitama. A group of working bonsai gardens just north of Tokyo. Growers moved here after the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, and the village was founded in 1925.
  • The Omiya Bonsai Art Museum. Opened in 2010 as the world's first public museum of bonsai art, a short walk from the gardens.
  • Ojiya and Yamakoshi, Niigata. The mountain villages where nishikigoi, the coloured koi carp, were first bred in the early nineteenth century. Many koi farms still work in the area.

Who Buys It

  • Bonsai societies and garden clubs, who want to meet growers and see trees that are decades old.
  • Koi keepers' associations, who come to see the fish at the farms where they are bred.
  • Collectors and small dealers, who may travel to buy, and need time with each seller.

Groups are usually small, and members often share a language and a club newsletter. That makes a well-run first trip easy to repeat the next year.

Timing the Trip

  • Koi farms in autumn. Breeders raise young fish in outdoor mud ponds over the summer and bring them in from about October. This is when many buyers visit.
  • Bonsai all year. The Omiya gardens can be visited in most seasons, but each garden sets its own opening days.
  • Combine the two. Saitama is close to Tokyo, and Niigata is reached by shinkansen, so one trip can cover both.

What to Tell Clients Before They Buy

  • Live plants. Many countries restrict the import of live plants and soil. Collectors must check their own country's plant health rules before buying a tree.
  • Koi. Export is arranged by the breeder or a specialist dealer, with health checks and paperwork. A traveller does not carry fish home.
  • Payment and shipping are agreed between the buyer and the seller. We arrange the travel, the visits and the interpreting, not the purchase.

For a quieter day between visits, see our note on selling imperial gardens to small groups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can a bonsai club see the best trees near Tokyo?

At Omiya Bonsai Village and the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum in Saitama City, a short train ride north of Tokyo.

When should a koi group visit Japan?

Autumn, from about October, when breeders bring in the fish from their outdoor ponds. Farm visits must be arranged in advance.

Can clients take a bonsai tree or koi home?

Only if their own country's import rules allow it. Koi are exported by the breeder or a dealer, not carried by the traveller.
