Kochi and the Shimanto River: Planning a Pacific-Side Shikoku Leg

10 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

Kochi group tours work best when the city is timed around a Sunday and followed by one night on the Shimanto River. Kochi sits on Shikoku's Pacific coast, about two and a half hours from Okayama on the Nanpu limited express, and it has its own airport with domestic flights. Our Japan team describes the city in its Kochi and Shimanto River guide. This note is for agents deciding how to fit it into a group programme.

Why It Works for Groups

  • A clear shape. Two nights in Kochi city and one on the Shimanto River covers the main sights without rushing.
  • A natural route. Kochi fits between Okayama or Takamatsu and Matsuyama, so the coach crosses Shikoku once instead of twice.
  • Strong food and market content. Clients remember the shared tables and the street market as much as the castle.

Kochi City: What to Plan Around

  • The Sunday Market. It has been held since 1690 on Otesuji street below the castle and runs for about a kilometre with several hundred stalls. Build the Kochi days so one of them is a Sunday morning, and confirm the date, because the market takes breaks around New Year and some festival days.
  • Kochi Castle. One of the twelve castles with an original keep, and its main palace building also survives. The climb is on foot up stone steps, so brief guests with limited mobility.
  • Hirome Market. An indoor food hall with shared tables. Book a block of tables for the group in advance rather than arriving at a busy time.
  • August. The Yosakoi dance festival fills the city each August and hotel rooms go quickly, so quote early or avoid those dates.

The Shimanto River Night

The Shimanto River runs for 196 kilometres and is crossed by 47 chinkabashi, low bridges without railings that let floods pass over them. Groups take a covered riverboat, rent canoes or bicycles, and walk across one of the bridges. The bridges are narrow, so the coach parks nearby and guests walk on. The river is about two hours from Kochi city by coach or train, which is why one night in the area makes the visit relaxed rather than a long day trip.
