Takamatsu and Kagawa: A Compact Shikoku Stop for Groups

10 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

Takamatsu group tours are the easiest way into Shikoku: the Marine Liner reaches the city from Okayama in about an hour, and Kagawa's sights sit within a short coach radius. Kagawa is Japan's smallest prefecture, with a classic strolling garden, a mountain shrine and its own noodle culture. Our Japan team describes it in its Takamatsu and Kagawa guide. This note is for agents fitting it into a group programme.

Why It Works for Groups

  • Two nights is enough. One day for the garden and an udon class, one morning for the shrine, with a third night if the group adds an island.
  • Easy access. Takamatsu Airport has domestic flights, and the Marine Liner crosses the Seto Ohashi bridge from Okayama.
  • A natural route. Okayama, two nights in Takamatsu, then on to Matsuyama or Kochi.

What to Brief Before Travel

  • Ritsurin Garden. A daimyo strolling garden of ponds, bridges and trained pines. Book the short boat ride and a tea stop for the group.
  • The Konpira steps. Kotohira-gu is about an hour from Takamatsu: 785 stone steps to the main shrine and 1,368 to the inner shrine. Most groups stop at the main shrine, and guests who prefer not to climb can wait at the foot of the approach. Brief the climb before departure.
  • Kanamaruza. Built in 1835 and Japan's oldest surviving kabuki theatre, it can be visited when it is not in use.
  • Udon. A self-service udon lunch suits every guest, and an udon-making class is a hands-on activity for groups of any age.
  • Shodoshima. About an hour by ferry from Takamatsu. Confirm ferry space for the group in advance; late October and November bring autumn colour to the Kankakei gorge.
