Tottori for Groups: The Sand Dunes, Sakaiminato and Mt. Daisen

11 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

Tottori sand dunes group tours suit repeat Japan clients who have done the Golden Route: the limited express reaches Tottori in about two and a half hours from Osaka, and one or two nights cover the dunes, the Sand Museum and Sakaiminato. Our Japan team describes the prefecture in its Tottori Sand Dunes and Sakaiminato guide. This note is for agents fitting it into a group programme.

Why It Works for Groups

  • A different Japan. A coastal dune field about 16 km long on the Sea of Japan, part of the San'in Kaigan Geopark, is unlike anything on the Golden Route.
  • Short transfers. Tottori sits between Kansai and the Matsue and Izumo side of the San'in coast, so it breaks a long westward day into two easy ones.
  • Something for every guest. Active guests climb the main ridge; others watch from a flat area at the foot of the dunes or spend the time at the Sand Museum.

What to Brief Before Travel

  • Footing and wind. The climb to the ridge is steep and sandy. Brief guests on shoes, and on covers for cameras and phones on windy days.
  • The Sand Museum season. The museum closes between exhibitions each year; in 2026 it was closed from 5 January to 23 April. Check the dates and the current theme before you confirm a winter or early-spring programme.
  • Sakaiminato. The Mizuki Shigeru Road is a shopping street lined with bronze yokai statues from the Gegege no Kitaro manga, with a museum to its creator. It suits families and anime fans.
  • Mt. Daisen. At 1,729 m the highest mountain in the Chugoku region, with a temple on its slopes; groups take the lower forest trails.
  • Rail passes. The Super Hakuto runs partly on the Chizu Express line, which the Japan Rail Pass does not cover, so pass holders pay a supplement for that section.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many nights does a group need in Tottori?

One night covers the dunes, the Sand Museum and Sakaiminato. Add a second for Mt. Daisen or a loop through Matsue and Izumo.

Is Tottori worth adding in winter?

Yes, for the snow crab season from about November to March. Note that the Sand Museum is closed from early January to late April.

Can every guest climb the dunes?

No need. The ridge is steep and soft underfoot, so we offer a flat viewing option at the base.
