Furano lavender group tours peak around mid-July, when Farm Tomita's fields are in full colour; early lavender shows from late June and late varieties last into early August. Asahikawa Airport is about 20 minutes from Biei and an hour from Furano by road. Explera's Japan team books the coach, hotels and timing around bloom updates.
Furano and Biei, in the middle of Hokkaido, are where Japan's summer flower images come from: striped lavender hills, patchwork farmland and a turquoise pond. Our Japan team covers the destination in its Furano and Biei guide. This note is for agents deciding when, and how, to put it in a group programme.
Why It Works for Groups
- A summer escape. Hokkaido is cooler and less humid than Honshu in July, which makes it an easy pitch for clients who dread Tokyo or Kyoto in the heat.
- A strong visual hook. Farm Tomita's lavender bands and Biei's rolling fields are images many clients already know from social media.
- Easy pairing. One or two nights here sit naturally beside Sapporo and Otaru in a week-long Hokkaido programme.

Timing Is the Product
- Lavender. The earliest plants colour from late June, the peak usually falls around mid-July, and late varieties hold on into early August. Bloom moves with the weather, so we confirm close to travel.
- Crowds. Peak weeks are busy and hotels fill early, so we book rooms well ahead and start groups in the morning, before the tour buses.
- Outside summer. Autumn colour and winter snow are quieter; the Blue Pond at Shirogane is lit up on winter evenings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which airport should the group use?
Asahikawa is the closest, about 20 minutes from Biei and an hour from Furano by road. New Chitose near Sapporo has far more flights, so we often route groups there and build in a road transfer of two hours or more.
How long should a group stay?
One night covers Furano and Biei. Two nights add Shirogane Onsen and Asahikawa's Asahiyama Zoo, which suits families and school groups.
Coach or rail?
Coach. Sapporo to Furano is about two hours by train, but Biei's Patchwork Road and the Blue Pond are coach stops, and a coach links the farms, the pond and the hotel.
Can we guarantee lavender on a fixed date?
No. Peak weeks change each year. We plan around mid-July, watch the farm's bloom updates and keep the flower day flexible inside the programme.
