Ibaraki group day trips work from Tokyo: Mito is about 75 minutes by limited express. Time Hitachi Seaside Park for blue nemophila from mid-April to early May or red kochia in mid to late October, and Kairakuen for plum blossom from mid-February. Our Japan team books the coach, guide and timing around bloom reports.
Ibaraki is the prefecture just north-east of Tokyo that most clients pass on the way to somewhere else. Our Japan team covers the destination in its Ibaraki and Hitachi Seaside Park guide. This note is for agents deciding when, and how, to put it in a group programme.
Why It Works for Groups
- A real day out from Tokyo. The limited express reaches Mito in roughly an hour and a quarter, so a group can leave after breakfast and be back for dinner.
- A seasonal hook. Hitachi Seaside Park turns one hill blue with nemophila in spring and red with kochia in autumn, images many clients already know from social media.
- A second-visit product. For repeat visitors who have done Nikko and Kamakura, Ibaraki is new without being far.

Timing Is the Product
- Nemophila. Usually from mid-April to early May, overlapping Japan's Golden Week holidays, when the park is at its busiest.
- Kochia. The shrubs turn red in mid to late October. Before about 10 October the hill can still be green, so we avoid fixing a group's only park day too early.
- Kairakuen plums. About 3,000 plum trees in Mito bloom from mid-February into March, during the Mito Plum Festival.
- Fukuroda Falls. A four-tiered waterfall about 120 metres high, at its best in autumn colour, inland in the north of the prefecture.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a group see the park and Fukuroda Falls on the same day?
It is possible but long, because the falls are inland in the north. We usually pair the park with Mito and keep Fukuroda for a programme continuing to Tohoku or one with a night in Ibaraki.
How fixed are the bloom dates?
Not fixed. Peaks move with the weather, so we watch the park's bloom reports and keep the day flexible inside the programme.
Rail or coach for groups?
Coach. The rail journey is easy, but Katsuta station is still a bus ride from the park gate, and a coach links the park, Mito and the falls.
Is Ibaraki worth it outside the flower seasons?
Yes for a short programme: Kairakuen is a calm garden all year, and the falls are good in autumn colour. The flower hills are the reason to time a visit.
