Tokushima group tours work best for repeat Japan clients who want gorges, a tidal strait and craft rather than another city: Kobe and Awaji are under two hours away by road, and one or two nights cover the Iya Valley, the Naruto whirlpools and an indigo workshop. Our Japan team describes the prefecture in its Tokushima, Iya Valley and Naruto guide. This note is for agents fitting it into a group programme.
Why It Works for Groups
- Easy to reach from Kansai. The Onaruto Bridge links Awaji Island to Tokushima, so a Kobe or Osaka programme can cross into Shikoku without a flight. Tokushima Airport also has flights from Tokyo.
- Two very different days. The Iya Valley is mountain gorge country with vine bridges and thatched farmhouses; Naruto is a coastal strait where the turning tide makes whirlpools.
- A hands-on session. Indigo dyeing is a short, seated activity that suits mixed-age groups and gives every guest something to take home.

What to Brief Before Travel
- Tide timing at Naruto. The whirlpools are largest at the spring tides around the new and full moon, and biggest in spring and autumn, when they can reach about 20 metres across. Best viewing is roughly an hour and a half either side of each tidal peak, so we build the day around the tide table.
- Boat or walkway. Sightseeing boats go close to the water; Uzu-no-Michi is a glass-floored walkway under the bridge's road deck, 45 metres above the sea, and suits guests who prefer to stay dry.
- The vine bridge. The Kazurabashi in the Iya Valley is crossed one way, a few people at a time, with a small fee per person. The planks have gaps, so offer a viewpoint alternative for guests who are unsteady on their feet.
- Vehicle size. The Kazurabashi car park takes large coaches, but roads deeper into the valley are narrow and winding. For Oku-Iya we plan mid-size vehicles and extra drive time.
- Awa Odori in August. Tokushima's dance festival runs in mid-August, during Obon, and hotel rooms in the city sell out early. Outside the festival, a dance hall performance gives groups the flavour all year.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many nights does a group need in Tokushima?
One night covers Naruto and an indigo workshop. Add a second for the Iya Valley, which is a long drive into the mountains.
When are the Naruto whirlpools at their best?
At the spring tides around the new and full moon, most of all in spring and autumn. We confirm the day's tide times before we fix the schedule.
Can a group join Awa Odori?
Yes, in mid-August, but rooms book out early. Request hotel blocks well ahead, or plan a dance hall performance outside the festival.
