Noto Peninsula for Groups: Quoting a Recovering Region

12 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

The short answer

Noto Peninsula group travel is possible again in part. Base the group in Kanazawa, visit the southern peninsula by day, and add a Wakura Onsen night only where a reopened inn confirms the date. Wajima's market still trades in temporary form, so Explera's Japan team confirms every venue in writing before quoting.

The Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa was hit by a magnitude 7.6 earthquake on 1 January 2024 and by heavy rain in September 2024. Our Japan team covers what has reopened in its Noto Peninsula guide. This note is for agents deciding whether, and how, to put Noto back into a group quote.

Why Agents Are Asking Again

  • Repeat clients want new ground. Groups who have done Kanazawa and Shirakawa-go are looking for a quieter Hokuriku add-on.
  • Visiting helps. Clients who know about the earthquake often ask whether going supports the region. It does, when the visit is planned around what is open.
  • Kanazawa is unaffected as a base. Hotels, the garden district and the station work as normal, so the risk sits only in the Noto day.
A stream between pines in a Kanazawa garden: the city works as the base, and Noto becomes a day out from it.

What Is Open, and What Is Not

  • Wakura Onsen. Some inns are back: TAOYA Wakura reopened on 12 April 2025. Other large inns are still closed, and the reopening dates published for the biggest ones disagree, from late 2026 to 2027.
  • Wajima Morning Market. The market's street was lost to the fire after the earthquake. Traders now sell from a temporary stall in a Wajima supermarket and run a travelling market in Kanazawa.
  • Roads. Some coastal roads still have repairs and lane restrictions, so driving times run longer than a map suggests.
A seafood rice bowl with salmon roe and miso soup: Hokuriku seafood remains a reason to go, wherever the group eats it.

How to Quote It Without Surprises

  • Confirm every inn, venue and road in writing at quotation, and again two weeks before travel.
  • Hold a Kanazawa-based alternative for each Noto day, so a closure changes the plan rather than cancelling the day.
  • Tell clients plainly that the experience is quieter and different from before, and that some places are temporary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a group stay overnight on the Noto Peninsula?

Sometimes. A night at Wakura Onsen works where a reopened inn can take the group on the date, which we confirm for each departure. Many groups stay in Kanazawa instead.

Is the Wajima Morning Market worth a stop?

As a short, flexible stop, yes. It runs in temporary form, so it is smaller than before and the arrangement can change.

Who is Noto right for?

Repeat visitors and culture-focused groups. First-time visitors on a tight schedule are usually better served by Kanazawa and the main Hokuriku route for now.

What happens if a venue closes before travel?

The day switches to its Kanazawa alternative, which we hold in the quote from the start.
