Japanese Cruise Ships for Groups: What Agents Should Know

13 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

The short answer

Japanese cruise ships suit small, food-focused groups and repeat Japan visitors more than first-timers. JNTO now lists six Japanese-run ships for overseas buyers. Explera's Japan team sells them as a short voyage inside a land programme, with the hotel, transfer and luggage handled on both sides of the cruise.

On 8 October 2026 Travel Voice reported that the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) has launched a webpage, built with Japanese cruise lines, that presents their ships to overseas travellers. Our Japan team explains each ship in its guide to Japan's own cruise ships. This note is for agents deciding whether one belongs in a group quote.

Why Is JNTO Promoting Japanese Ships Now?

  • A national target. According to the report, Japan's transport ministry wants one million Japanese cruise passengers a year by 2030, about 70 per cent of them on Japanese-operated ships.
  • New tonnage. MITSUI OCEAN FUJI entered service in December 2024, and its sister ship MITSUI OCEAN SAKURA began sailing from Yokohama on 19 September 2026.
  • A product most agents have not sold. Japan by sea usually means the large international lines. These ships offer Japanese service and food on board instead.

Which Groups Do These Ships Suit?

  • Small private groups and couples' circles. Cabin counts are limited, so a block of cabins or a charter needs early contact with the line.
  • Repeat visitors. Clients who have done Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka on land get a new way to see the coast.
  • Food-focused travellers. Japanese dining is a large part of what these ships sell.

They are a weaker fit for first-time visitors on a tight schedule, and for clients who expect English throughout: the ships serve mainly Japanese guests, so announcements, menus and dress codes may lean Japanese.

How Do You Quote a Cruise Inside a Group Programme?

  • Keep the cruise short, usually two to four nights, and build the land days around it.
  • Book the night before embarkation near the port, and the transfer to the terminal.
  • Forward luggage so the group boards with hand luggage only, and meet the group at the pier after disembarkation.
  • Do not sell SEFU yet: trade press in October 2026 reported that R Yacht's new ship will not enter service until 2028.
The rail of a ship's open deck over calm sea: short coastal voyages are the norm on Japanese ships.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ships does the JNTO page list?

Six: NYK Cruises' Asuka III and Asuka II, Mitsui Ocean Cruises' MITSUI OCEAN FUJI and MITSUI OCEAN SAKURA, R Yacht's SEFU, and guntû on the Seto Inland Sea.

Can a group book a whole ship?

Some lines take charters or large cabin blocks, but capacity and dates vary by ship. We ask each line before quoting.

Is English spoken on board?

Not always. These ships serve mainly Japanese guests, so we check what each line offers in English and brief clients before they sail.

What does Explera handle around the cruise?

The hotel before and after, transfers to and from the terminal, luggage forwarding, guiding and the rest of the land programme.
