Miyakojima suits groups that want an Okinawa beach stay without boat transfers. Bridges join Miyako to Irabu, Shimoji, Kurima and Ikema, so one hotel and one coach reach all five islands. Explera's Japan team plans it for spring or autumn, and builds a spare day into summer stays for typhoon risk.
For an agent, the selling point of Miyakojima is logistics rather than scenery. Most Okinawa island extensions involve ferries, and ferries mean weather cancellations, luggage handling and split groups. Miyako avoids most of that: three road bridges tie it to its neighbours, so a group can stay in one hotel and see several islands by coach. Our Japan team describes the islands in its Miyakojima guide for groups; this page covers how to build and sell the stay.
Which Islands Can a Coach Reach?
- Irabu and Shimoji. The Irabu Bridge, 3,540 metres long and opened on 31 January 2015, links Miyako to Irabu, which joins Shimoji by short crossings.
- Kurima. The Kurima Bridge, about 1,690 metres, reaches a small island with a viewpoint over the strait.
- Ikema. The Ikema Bridge, about 1,425 metres, opened in 1992 and runs to the north.
A first full day can cross all three with beach and cape stops. Because there is no ferry leg, the day does not depend on sea conditions in the way an island-hopping day from Ishigaki does.

How Does a Group Fly In?
Miyako has two airports. Miyako Airport is the main one; Miyako Shimojishima Airport reopened to scheduled flights when its new passenger terminal opened on 30 March 2019. Most groups connect through Naha, which is under an hour's flight away, and some mainland cities have direct services. Routes and frequencies change by season, so we confirm schedules and group fares before quoting.
When Should Agents Sell It?
- Spring and autumn are the most comfortable months for coach touring and walking.
- Summer is the sea season, but typhoon season runs roughly from June to October, peaking in late summer. We keep flights flexible and build in a spare day.
- As an extension. Miyako works best as three or four nights after a mainland or Naha programme, for clients who want rest rather than another city.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do groups need a ferry to see the other islands?
No. Irabu, Shimoji, Kurima and Ikema are all joined to Miyako by road, so a coach reaches them from one hotel.
How long should a Miyakojima stay be?
Three or four nights works for most groups: one day across the bridges, one or two on the beach or the reef, and a spare day in typhoon season.
Is snorkelling suitable for beginners?
Yes, with a licensed operator at sheltered, guided sites. We match the site to the group's swimming ability and to the day's sea conditions.
Can Miyakojima be combined with Ishigaki?
Yes, by air. The two are separate island groups, so each needs its own flight; we plan one as the main stay and keep the other short.
