Ashiya Sand Sculptures: A Kyushu Autumn Stop for Groups

14 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 2 min read

The short answer

The Ashiya Sand Sculpture Exhibition runs from 23 October to 8 November 2026 at Ashiya Seaside Park in Fukuoka Prefecture, open 10:00 to 21:00. Explera DMC's Japan team sells it as a half-day or evening stop for groups touring northern Kyushu, placed between Kitakyushu and Fukuoka city.

The Ashiya Sand Sculpture Exhibition for groups is a short, seasonal addition that gives a northern Kyushu programme something new to show in autumn. It is held each year on the coast of Fukuoka Prefecture, and the 2026 edition is the eleventh. Our Japan team describes the event and the site in its note on the Ashiya exhibition; this page looks at it from the side of an agent selling a Kyushu tour.

What Is the Ashiya Sand Sculpture Exhibition?

  • Dates and hours. 23 October to 8 November 2026, open 10:00 to 21:00 with last entry at 20:30, according to the Fukuoka tourism site.
  • The works. Large sculptures carved from sand by professional sculptors, lit after dark, with fireworks planned on some weekend evenings.
  • Scale. Japan Travel reported that about 83,000 people visited the 2025 edition.
  • Location. Ashiya Seaside Park, in a small coastal town west of Kitakyushu at the mouth of the Onga River.

Which Groups Is It For?

  • Northern Kyushu programmes. Groups already staying in Kitakyushu or Fukuoka city, for whom Ashiya is a short coach transfer.
  • Families and school groups. The site is outdoors, flat and easy to walk, and the works are visual rather than text-based.
  • Repeat visitors to Japan. Clients who have done the main cities and want a seasonal event they will not find in Tokyo or Kyoto.
  • Not a reason to travel on its own. We sell it as part of a Kyushu itinerary, not as the anchor of a trip.
A pine-lined beach under a grey sky: the exhibition is outdoors on the coast, so we plan for wind and rain.

How Does It Fit Into a Kyushu Itinerary?

  • Half a day. An hour or so at the sculptures plus lunch is enough for most groups.
  • Evening option. A visit after dark to see the lighting works well with a hotel night in Kitakyushu.
  • Transport. For a group we use a private coach from Kitakyushu or Fukuoka city; the park has parking for about 1,000 vehicles.
  • Weather. We keep an indoor alternative ready and check the forecast the day before.
