JNTO's 2027 Picks: Planning Japan Group Programmes

14 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

The short answer

On 29 September 2026 JNTO named Nara, Kagawa, Shimane, Niigata and Kanagawa as its five prefectures to visit in 2027. For Explera DMC's Japan team, the list matters to group planners because two of the five hold fixed-date events, three add new hotels, and all five can be routed alongside the Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka core.

Japan 2027 group destinations now have an official shortlist. The Japan National Tourism Organization's release "Where to Go in 2027: Japan Edition" picks five prefectures and gives each a reason that falls in 2027. Our Japan team has summarised each pick in its note on JNTO's five prefectures for 2027; this page reads the same list as a group planner would, by dates, hotels and routing.

What Did JNTO Announce?

  • Nara. The Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara, 19 archaeological sites, were added to UNESCO's World Heritage List in July 2026.
  • Kagawa. Presented as a prefecture of art, with two Mandarin Oriental hotels and the reopening of the MIMOCA art museum in Marugame.
  • Shimane. The Iwami Ginzan silver mine marks 500 years since its discovery and 20 years as a World Heritage site in 2027.
  • Niigata. The 10th Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, together with the region's rice, sake and the Sado Island Gold Mine.
  • Kanagawa. GREEN×EXPO 2027, the international horticultural expo in Yokohama.
The Nippon Maru sailing ship moored in Yokohama: Kanagawa is on JNTO's list because of GREEN×EXPO 2027.

Which Picks Fix the Dates of a Group Trip?

  • Niigata, 17 July to 7 November 2027. The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale is spread across a large rural area, so a group needs a coach and a planned order of sites rather than a single venue visit.
  • Kanagawa, 19 March to 26 September 2027. GREEN×EXPO 2027 runs for more than six months, but Yokohama hotels will be busier through the expo period, so room blocks should be held early.
  • Shimane, all of 2027. The Iwami Ginzan anniversaries give no single date. We check event days and any visitor limits as the year approaches.

Which New Hotels Should Agents Wait For?

JNTO lists several openings: HOSHINOYA Asuka in 2027, Mandarin Oriental Takamatsu and Mandarin Oriental Naoshima in summer 2027, HOTEL THE MITSUI HAKONE on 15 December 2026 and Conrad Yokohama in 2027. Announced dates can move, so we only contract a new hotel for a group once it has confirmed its opening and its group terms. Until then we quote with an existing hotel and note the alternative.

How Do the Five Fit a Group Itinerary?

  • Day trips from the core. Nara and Asuka work as a full day from Kyoto or Osaka; Yokohama and the expo work as a day or a night from Tokyo.
  • Extra nights. Kagawa, Shimane and Niigata each need two or three nights and suit repeat visitors or a second trip.
  • Themes. Art groups can combine Kagawa and Niigata; heritage groups can combine Nara and Shimane.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which prefectures did JNTO choose for 2027?

Nara, Kagawa, Shimane, Niigata and Kanagawa, in its "Where to Go in 2027: Japan Edition" release of 29 September 2026.

When should groups visit Niigata for the art triennale?

The 10th Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale runs from 17 July to 7 November 2027, according to JNTO. We hold rooms for the festival period early.

When is GREEN×EXPO 2027 in Yokohama?

From 19 March to 26 September 2027. Yokohama is close to Tokyo, so groups can visit as a day trip or stay one night.

Should we sell the new hotels JNTO mentions now?

We quote new hotels only after they confirm their opening date and group terms. Until then we offer an existing hotel and keep the new one as an option.
