Zenko-ji in Nagano holds its Gokaicho, the public display of a sacred Buddhist image, from 4 April to 19 June 2027. Explera DMC advises agencies to put Nagano into spring 2027 Japan programmes now, plan weekday temple visits, and reserve temple lodgings early, because bookings for the period have already opened.
The Zenko-ji Gokaicho is one of the largest temple events in Japan, and in 2027 it falls across the spring season that many of our source markets already sell. Our Japan team covers the dates and the temple town in its note on the 2027 Gokaicho. This page is for agencies and tour operators deciding whether, and how, to build Nagano into a 2027 programme.
What Is Confirmed for 2027?
- 4 April to 19 June 2027. Zenko-ji, in the centre of Nagano city, holds its Gokaicho for 77 days.
- The image on display. The temple's principal image is never shown. During the Gokaicho it displays the Maedate Honzon, a second image made in its likeness.
- Rooms are already selling. On 28 September 2026, Rengein, a shukubo (temple lodging) in the temple town, announced that it had opened bookings for the 2027 period.
- A second festival nearby. According to the Nagano Prefectural Museum of History, Togakushi Shrine holds its largest festival, the Shikinen Taisai, in 2027. Its dates had not been published when we wrote this.

How Should Agencies Time a Group Visit?
- Avoid Golden Week where you can. Late April to early May is Japan's busiest domestic holiday period, and weekend queues at the temple will be long.
- Plan weekdays and early mornings. Groups that stay overnight in Nagano can attend the temple's daily morning service before day visitors arrive.
- Allow one or two nights. Nagano is on the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo, so the city fits between Tokyo and the Japan Alps or the Hokuriku coast.
- Match the room type to the group. Temple lodgings have limited rooms, fixed meal times and simple meals. A small, interested group may enjoy one night there; a large coach group is usually easier in a city hotel.
What Can Be Added Around Nagano?
Togakushi, in the cedar forest north-west of the city, makes a half-day or full-day extension, and is known for its soba. Once the Shikinen Taisai dates are published, we can tell agencies whether a 2027 group can see both events in one stay.
