A new suspension bridge on the Tongariro River Trail at Tūrangi, named Te Tauranga o Waikari on 16 October 2026, takes up to 20 people at a time. Explera DMC plans walks and rides on the trail, crossing larger groups in smaller parties, as part of programmes around Lake Taupō and Tongariro National Park.
For agents selling the central North Island, the Tongariro River Trail at Tūrangi is an easy riverside outing between Lake Taupō and Tongariro National Park. Our New Zealand team covers the new bridge in its briefing on the Tongariro River Trail. This page is the short version for agents planning group walks and rides.
What Has Changed on the Tongariro River Trail?
- A new crossing. A suspension bridge with steel cables and a timber deck replaces the Major Jones bridge, which was nearly 70 years old.
- A gifted name. Ngāti Tūrangitukua gifted the name Te Tauranga o Waikari at a ceremony on 16 October 2026. A tauranga is an anchorage, fishing ground and crossing place.
- Built in partnership. The Department of Conservation built the bridge with Ngāti Tūrangitukua and the Tūwharetoa Māori Trust Board.
- Paid for by visitors. The bridge was funded through the International Visitor Levy, which most international visitors pay when they apply for a visa or an NZeTA.

How Should a Group Plan the Crossing?
- Twenty people at a time. The bridge has a load limit of 20 people, so a coach group of 40 crosses in two or more parties, with a guide or tour leader at each end.
- A shared path. Walkers, cyclists and anglers use the same trail, so riders slow down on the bridge and give others room.
- Easier for bikes. The new deck is slightly wider than the old bridge, which gives cyclists easier access.
- The bridge by its name. Programmes and guide commentary call the bridge Te Tauranga o Waikari and explain what the name means.

Where Does the Trail Fit in a Programme?
- Between the lake and the park. Tūrangi sits at the southern end of Lake Taupō, on the road between Taupō and Tongariro National Park.
- An easy add-on. The riverside trail fits around a stay in Taupō or a day in Tongariro National Park.
- The wider region. Our briefing on geothermal tours in Rotorua and Taupō covers the rest of the central North Island.
