Mandarin Oriental plans two Setouchi hotels for summer 2027: a 92-room hotel on the Takamatsu harbour front and a 22-room ryokan on the art island of Naoshima. No opening dates or rates are out yet. Explera DMC builds Setouchi programmes around them and keeps an alternative hotel in every plan.
Setouchi has had the art, the ferries and the food for years. What it has lacked, for a certain kind of client, is a big-name luxury hotel. That changes in 2027. Our Japan team has the details in its Mandarin Oriental Setouchi note; this page is for agencies deciding whether to pitch it now.
What Is Mandarin Oriental Setouchi?
- Takamatsu, 92 rooms. On the harbour front next to JR Takamatsu Station, about 30 minutes by car from Takamatsu Airport, with restaurants, bars and a spa.
- Naoshima, 22 rooms. A contemporary ryokan in a fishing village, with suites and villas in a new main building and three village houses.
- Summer 2027 for both, according to JNTO. Exact dates have not been announced.
- A third resort in 2030, with 50 rooms on another island in the Seto Inland Sea. It is the brand's second Japanese location after Tokyo.

Who Should Agents Pitch It To?
- Takamatsu for groups that move. A station-side hotel on the harbour suits groups taking ferries to the art islands by day and trains across Shikoku.
- Naoshima for the very small. Twenty-two rooms means a couple of families, a board retreat or a private buy-out. It is not a hotel for a 60-person incentive.
- Sell the region, not the opening. Island museums, ferries and Kagawa's food make the trip. The hotel is the reason to go now rather than later.
- Wait for rates before you quote. We price these hotels once rates and opening dates are released, and keep an alternative in every plan until then.
