Tunnel Beach Dunedin: A Group Plan After the Track Upgrade

24 October 2026 · Explera DMC · 3 min read

The short answer

The Tunnel Beach track near Dunedin has finished a four-year upgrade, marked on 21 October 2026, with new panels sharing Kāi Tahu stories. The full walk is 2.6 km and about an hour return, with a steep climb back. Explera DMC plans group stops around low tide, the car park hours and each group's fitness.

Tunnel Beach is one of those stops that looks easy on an itinerary and is not. It is about 15 minutes by car from central Dunedin, and the hard part is the climb back. Our New Zealand team has the detail in its note on the Tunnel Beach upgrade; this is our planning version for agencies that sell New Zealand with our other destinations.

What Has Changed at Tunnel Beach?

  • A finished upgrade. A celebration on 21 October 2026 marked the end of four years of work, which the Department of Conservation says has made the track safer and more resilient to weather.
  • Stories along the track. Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou shared their knowledge for new interpretation panels, with a cultural narrative written by Dr Megan Potiki (Kāi Tahu).
  • Busy all year. DOC says the track has more than 200,000 visitors a year.

How Long Is the Walk?

  • Short option. 600 metres to the first viewpoint, about 10 minutes return.
  • Full walk. 2.6 kilometres to the tunnel and beach, about 1 hour return. It is steep and narrow in places, with zigzags and steps, and the return is uphill.
  • The tunnel itself. It is dark, with a low ceiling, slippery steps and no handrail, so clients need a torch.

What Should Agents Check Before Selling Tunnel Beach?

  • The tide. DOC advises a visit at low tide. The beach is unsafe at high tide and in rough seas, and it is not patrolled.
  • The car park hours. Dunedin City Council opens the car park from 8am to 9pm between September and March, and from 9am to 5pm between April and August. A vehicle left after closing is locked in, so we time the coach with margin.
  • Split the group. We offer the first viewpoint as the short option, so slower walkers are not pushed into a climb they cannot manage.
  • Build the rest of the day. Our Otago Central Rail Trail guide for groups and our note on New Zealand's Great Walks for groups cover more walking in the south.
